Q: Create apple id for a child - credit card required

I installed iOS 8. I turned on Family Sharing, and tried to create an AppleID for my son (who is 5).

No matter what I do, the setup fails, asking me for a credit card (see attached image for screenshot). I have a valid card associated with the account (on first try, the setup asked me for the security code, which I supplied). I have added this card back in on iOS and on my Mac using iTunes. It never accepts that I have a card added to the account. Which means I can't add an AppleID for my son. What gives?

The solution is moronic. You have use a full blown credit card--not a debit card--for this to work. I don't have any credit cards, so I can't use this feature? WTH Apple?! This is ridiculous! Some people only have their debit cards.

I'm not sure if it has anything to do with an actual credit card or debit card. Can anyone that has an actual credit card and not debit card for their iTunes account confirm if it works for them.

Same here.  I read something in a thread talking about not working with debit cards but that is BS.  I have a Visa Check Card as I avoid Credit like Ebola.  Apple has had no problem taking thousands of dollars right off that check card.  This is a problem they need to fix.

I just posted the same thing. I use a debit but it asks me for a credit card when trying to add a child. I don't have any credit cards and don't plan on adding one. They need to allow debits as that's what I've been using for years.

I don't know if this has anything to do with the problem, but I originally had PayPal as my iTunes payment method. In upgrading to the iOS 8 beta it appeared that PayPal was no longer a "preferred" payment method to I switched to my PayPal MasterCard.

I'm just putting it out there to see if there is any common cause for the issue...

Anyway I just created a regular AppleID for my 10-year old daughter, with a birth year of 2004 (you cannot create an account for users with birth years < 2004), and was able to create an account. Hopefully I can change it later once the issues has been resolved.

Solved by using a credit card instead. Hope switching back to debit works.*sigh.

I found http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5552 where it says you must have a credit card setup with iTunes. PayPal or debit cards aren't accepted when you set up an account for a child under 13.

My guess for the reason for this requirement is that kids under 18 can technically have a debit card, so this is to ensure that the person paying is actually an adult (someone who can have a credit card) to be compliant with the Child Online Protection Act. Just my thought though.

hmm...im getting the error that I have a "DEBIT" card on file but a "CREDIT" card is required to prove i am an adult and make an account for a child; when trying to make an account for my child via iCloud Family sharing on my iPhone.

managing the id of my 10 year olds account online doesn't work either; giving the error that I am unable to change the birthday at this time, she's 10...why should I have to change it anyway.

what...a....freakn'....mess!! How hard is it to add an account > is this user an adult or child? > or simply > give this user unlimited access to purchasing/downloads, because maybe there's an adult that doesn't need to have full access to purchases. how of all things...THIS is causing issues.

How can beta be out for so long and still have so many issues. by the time 8.1 rolls around and using my device is the experience it should be, iOS 9 will be a few months away dangling amazing features in your face that will make you upgrade only to wait 6 months for them to work.

Ug...didn't mean for this to turn into a rant, but it feels like I've switched back to Android.

Well, I also had this stupid, not so friendly, error. I tried two devices, iphone and ipad, same error. I switched card under payment to a credit care and was then able to create two child accounts. Afterwards I switched back to my debit card without problem. the child accounts are still there.

Looks like changing to an actual credit card is the only solution. I did this, created the ID, then changed payment back to my check card.

It would be HELPFUL if the screen telling us we need a credit card would explicitly specify that a check or debit card is not acceptable. This is the root of the confusion for me - it says I have a card on file but then tells me I need to have a card on file. Adding type of card would eliminate this.

FYI, for all of you adding an ID for a child - you end up being forced to use an iCloud address, no ability to use an existing email address for the ID. And once you've created an AppleID with iCloud as primary email, you can't change it. So even though my son has his own Gmail account, he now has an iCloud account (that he will never use) as his ID...

Saw the thread about actual credit cards, and I have a different experience.  I'm using an actual credit card.  I get all the way to the 2nd "Terms" agreement, and it says "Cannot create Apple id. Try again later". (or something REALLY close to that as I don't feel like doing it for the 72nd time.) This is either a bug or Apple has backend/server issues.

Wow! You'd rather let your 5-year-old use a gmail address where every interaction is processed as fodder for Google's ad business?

If it were my kid, I'd be switching him over to his new iCloud account and washing my hands of that whole Google you-are-their-product mess.

Apple, please figure an alternate method of age verification. I don't have credit cards. Don't believe in buying something you can't afford to pay for. It's disappointing that I can't set up my kids accounts they way I hoped to without applying for something against my values..

I agree, Kaleb. It's ridiculous that they can't accept a debit card. It's 2014 for crying out loud!!!
