Q: No sound through hdmi - macbook pro

I can connect my tv to my macbook pro through a HDMI cable and the picture shows up perfectly. However, the sound goes through my laptop speakers and not through the tv. When I go into Preferences --> sound --> output, there is not option to select for the hdmi, just the internal speakers. How can I get the sound to go through the tv instead?

I have honestly tried every single thing that anyone has suggested on this post. And I still cannot get the sound to come through. In the past, it has worked just fine. But for the past few months the sound hasn't been working when I try to stream from my computer to my tv. HELP PLEASE!!!

Will you please confirm what IS happening?

Is sound playing through your computer instead, and when you hold down the option button and click volume on the upper right sound icon, while you are playing to TV, what output audio destinations do you see and what is selected, while trying to play to TV?

Go to your TV menu > sound settings > select input to "COMMON"

Hope this will fix it as it did in my case. I use SONY BRAVIA...

    Cheers!!!

This worked for me! I was trying to play a video with VLC. In VLC audio options you can find the "Audio device" option. I selected HDMI/Samsung and it worked.

    Hope this could help!

Here is my problem, I want to use it to watch movies on my projector but it is hooked up to my stereo.  I can't seem to get it to get sound through the stereo but I get the video no problem.

BY GEORGE I SOLVED THE PROBLEM!!!!!

For Everyone who STILL can't get sound to your TV, I used a simple auxiliary cord from my headphone output on my computer into my PC Audio In the back of my TV... My MacBook I use to connect to my TV is a 2009 MacBook and my TV is a 2014 Insignia LED flatscreen.... after 2 years of searching for answers on this thread and people NOT understanding our struggles that the OPTION to select your TV DOES NOT show up in Preferences>sound LoL.... this is the only other solution. I now have sound from my TV and can sit in my bed and watch with remote in hand ;-) hope this helps.....
