Q: Question about Chinese fonts - What is the language type of the font?

Hello,

I need to do a book in InDesign with Chinese fonts.

All text is written in Word and all I need to do is to redefine it with a Chinese font.

I search apple site to find which fonts are installed and for which type of Chinese they support.

Under the article for OS 10.4, there is a list that shows the font name and the type of language it is used for.

Mac OS X 10.4: Fonts list

For example:

Apple LiGothic Medium.dfont - Traditional Chinese

But, on the article for OS 10.9.4 (Mavericks)

OS X: Fonts included with Mavericks

It only shows the font name but not it's language.

Since I have no knowledge about Chinese, I can't know through this list what is the language type of the font as it shows in the os x 10.4 article.

Where can I find this info?

Thank you very much

Shlomit

Is the text already in the Chinese language?  If so it must already be in a Chinese font.   Is your problem that you need to use a different one?

If it is not in the Chinese language, changing the font will not accomplish anything.

    This page may help:

You can also see the fonts that support chinese by selecting a chinese character in Character Viewer and looking at the Font Variation pane.

    Hi Tom,

    Thank you for your answers.

Yes, the text is already in Chinese font but it's in Microsoft Word and I'm on InDesign and I need a different type of font.

Again, the Yale link is an old article which isn't relevant to os 10.9.

In the first link, again, I have no idea weather the font is for Traditional Chinese of Simplified so how would I know which font to use?

This is my main problem, not knowing this info.

    Thanks a lot

    Shlomit

It may not matter, depending on your text, as some fonts (anthing listed with a Unicode or gb18030 charset) cover both versions.  What is the name of the font shown for Chinese in the MS Word document?    If MingLiU, then any Unicode or gb18030 font should work fine.

I am pretty sure the fonts listed in the Yale link are still there in 10.9.
