Q: No incoming message sound when locked - iPhone 6, iOS 8

Hi All...

I've been trying to find an answer to this question, but have yet to resolve it.  I have a new iPhone 6 plus.  When a new message is received, the screen wakes up and displays the message info, but there is no associated sound.  I have a sound set for messages in settings, but it doesn't matter what I choose, it still does not make a sound when an iMessage or text message comes in.  The sounds do work when the phone is unlocked.  I do not have Do Not Disturb turned on, the volume switch is turned on and the volume is at the top value.

Is this an iOS 8 bug?  I've rebooted several times and I've done a soft reset.

Please help!

Just as an update... if you choose a very short sound as your message audio, it will 'sort of' work... a longer sound (like the 'chime') will cut off or not sound at all.  After a few more reboots and switching the audio clip back and forth, I have some of the sounds working.  It seems to be hit and miss... not sure if this is a bug in iOS 8 or not.  Hopefully, someone comes up with an answer.

My iPhone 6 has started doing this today and it seemed to start after i used my headphones. I'm getting no tones from any apps, imessage/text/sms whatsapp, mail. Nothing.

Strange... I haven't even used headphones yet, so my issue isn't related to the headphone jack.  I wonder if there is a contact 'stuck' inside your jack making the iPhone 'think' it still has headphones plugged in?  Other sounds come out of the speaker though?  Music etc?

Do your notification sounds not work even when the phone is unlocked, or only when locked?

Exact same, started working all of a sudden after I received a message while I had headphones in, since then seems to be ok.

Hi, I have been experiencing this same problem, including with incoming voice calls, on my iPhone 6. Has Apple suggested a fix for this? Using the headphones doesn't appear to do the trick. Thanks.

I've had this issue on my 4s and 5s only when I've configured certain email accounts as IMAP.  Changing to POP3 alleviated the issue for me.  Not sure if it's the same thing here, but I thought I'd mention it.

It seems that my text message and email notification sounds are cut off if I've used the headphones AND if I've been connected to a bluetooth speaker and then disconnected.  It resolves itself on reboot of the device.  I'm on iOS 8.1.. still have the same problem.

I just got an iphone 6 yesterday. same thing is happening to me. i'm on iOS 8.1.1. The phone still vibrates but it doesn't do the text tone. And before people tell me that it's on silent, i have my vibrate off when it's on silent. So it vibrates only when sound is on.

I still haven't found a solution on 8.1.1.  It still affects me if I've had headphones plugged in and then I remove them.  After removing the headphones, the sounds are all cut off until I reboot.  This is only noticeable if you have a longer tone set up so that you can hear it being cut off.

I have the regular Ding ringtone sound, and it doesn't even get cut off, it just doesn't play. And yeah I agree that it has something to do with the headphones because I've noticed it will work sometimes and other times it won't. Really annoying when I have clients who message me and need an urgent response.

This is also happening to my iphone.  I have also reset it many times.  Works once and then not again.  No sounds when I receive a text or email.  My emails don't come in until I reset.  Does anyone have a solution to this?

I found that  in the Do Not Disturb that my setting was on manual. Once I toggled it off the text tones worked in the locked screen

    Hey everyone,

So i fixed it. Apparently something was wrong with the backup that was used to update my new iPhone 6 (8.1.1) from my previous phone. After restoring the phone and instead of restoring from backup, restoring it as a new phone, the phone was fixed. It's going to be a pain to redo all of your settings, but tones work correctly after. To see if this is your problem restore your phone as new after backing up. If the problem is fixed, then you know it was backup, otherwise restore again and restore from the previous backup you made and you'll be back where you started. Hope this can help someone else out there. Good luck.

I have this problem with my iPhone 6 Plus too. It also plagued me on and off with my 4S.

Sometimes I will receive alert tones, other times I won't. I'm sitting here tonight texting back and forth with my girlfriend. The phone is right next to me, the volume is on full and I don't have "do not disturb" switched on. Everything is set correctly in the notification settings. When I get a text, sometimes it makes a sound, other times it doesn't. I have to keep checking my phone and sometimes there will be a new text that neither made a sound or displayed on the lock screen. The same thing happens on and off with emails, voice calls and voice mails.

I use my phone to run my business and obviously this is a huge problem. I've missed very important calls and messages and it's ended up costing me money as well as creating ill feeling between myself and clients. I love my iPhone but to be honest I'm starting to wonder if I made the right choice all those years ago when I switched from BlackBerry. My BlackBerry was absolutely 100% rock solid at these core communication features. Never missed a call or notification. My iPhone is so unreliable with notifications that I'm constantly taking it out of my bag to see if someone's called or texted me.

I've seen this problem reported all over the web and Apple have done nothing to fix it. They cannot be unaware of it. I don't know whether it's a software problem or a hardware problem, but they really need to get it sorted out.
