Q: See a Flash Drive

I have installed a new Belkin usb port in the PCI slot of my Beige All in One G3 powermac but I cannot see anything plugged into it on my desktop.  How do you see a flash drive plugged in?

PowerMac, Mac OS 9.2.x

Ask Belkin since it's their product. Did you install drivers for it? What version of USB does it support on your machine (USB 1.0, 2.0?)

Everything I have read on this forum and others has indicated that the drivers is already part of  the OS 9 operating system and does not needed to be added.  When I go into the Apple System Profiler it indicates in "Devices and Volumes" that there is something there, it just does not appear anywhere on my desktop.  The package indicated that  the device would work on a g3 running os9 as a usb 1.0.

That's not entirely the case as the built-in drivers do not always provide full support for USB mass storage devices. Furthermore, your flash drive may not work on USB 1.0 because the port isn't fast enough.

Perhaps some useful information here: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2092

This was very helpful except I don't where to get the extensions described.

The common solution to the three issues above is to install the following USB extensions (that were included in Mac OS 9.1):

    HID Library 1.4.6

    Serial ShimLib 1.4.6

    USB Device Extension 1.4.6

    USB Mass Storage Support 2.0.9

    USB Software Locator 1.4.6

    USB Support 1.4.6

Follow the instructions (a bit further down the page) to get the Tome Viewer and the OS9.1 update so that you can extract the needed extensions. The link in that thread for the 9.1 update doesn't work, but here's another thread that apparently has some working links: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3724457.

I saw that but none of the links worked, thanks for the better link.  I'll try it in the next few days and let you know howit works.

I successfully added the extensions but I still can't see anything hooked to the USB ports in the finder.  Any other ideas?  Thanks for all the help.

Thanks to all of you who have tried to help.  I solved my problem by doing a CLEAN install of OS 9.1.  I have discovered that sometimes this is not necessary but it should probably be the default fix.
