Q: IPAD2 very slow after IOS 8 upgrade

After IOS 8 upgrade many aplications ( Safari, Facebook, etc) load  very, very slow (comparing with 7 version) , with a significant delay of more than 10 seconds...

Who can I solve this problem? Any workaround?

PD

Apple should better test the software before delivering.

Thanks.

WWorst operating system update in my experience.  It is slow, hangs, reloads, freezes, screen distortions, uses a great deal of power - well you name it.  Apple needs to get on top of this immediately as each use of the iPad further degrades its use.

Selena, I appreciate your information on how to downgrade to 7.1.2.

HOWEVER - Proper resolution to these type of issues resides with the software provider and should not require the consumer to jump through a series of hoops to restore their system.

I'm experiencing the same performance issues described by others and certain application upgrades are hanging up.  It's clear that the testing for backward compatibility was inadequate and that's unacceptable.  These issues could have been identified to warn owners of older products of the potential risks of upgrading.

Lesson Learned - In the future, I'll wait at least a month or two before upgrading to allow time for these types of issues to be identified and resolved.

Of course they should, but that ship has sailed.   The Apple developers have no incentive to make things right for iPad 2 since they are banking on enough users to just buy a new tablet.

This rollout is just planned obsolescence, exactly as Apple intended.

I am also experiencing slow performance on my iPad 3 after upgrading to iOS 8. Everything is slower, switching from one application to another, apps randomly close unexpectedly, pressing the home button does not register as fast as it used to. Trying to change the wallpaper took more than 15 seconds to apply the new image.

Safari is also extremely slow. Sometimes typing a new URL or search term does not register fast enough. Many times when I open a new tab in Safari and click on a shortcut, the click does not register and the browser becomes unresponsive. Everything seems to move in slow motion. My iPad does not longer have that smooth operating feeling it used to have. The more it behaves in this manner, the less I want to use it.

    We need a fix ASAP.

I'm rather sick of people saying "You should have waited until others test it". Well, it's not other people's job to test it, it is the developer who should be testing a release. That is why there is an alpha and beta test program.

Also, I support hundreds of devices in my line of work and my clients expect me to have answers first, so I am always an early adopter of whatever technology is there (or in this case, updates).  My clients want to know if they are going to have problems if THEY update.  I can't just say "dunno, haven't done it".

But, none-the-less, this is a huge huge problem for iPad owners.   I can confirm 3 iPads have similar issues.

    iPad 2 64GB w/Verizon cellular - Mine:
Upgraded to IOS 8 and immediately regretted doing so.   Attempted every work-around known to man to fix some of the problems:

Hanging system - entire device locks up for milliseconds to SECONDS.

Hanging apps - where an app stops responding for milliseconds to SECONDS. Apple provided apps such as mail and safari.

Crashing apps - where an app just exits.

Very very very slow connectivity - wifi slower than broadband.

    VERY slow response when typing.

VERY sluggish when opening an app or closing it... jerky... Long delays before displaying text when opening mail/safari.  Several seconds.

Sketchy Cellular access - sometimes just has none - reboot fixes it, toggling off broadband and back on also gets it going, sometimes.

Copy/Paste all horked - clipboard remembers things and doesn't forget them, most recent copy not replacing old data.

IPad 3 16GB w/o cellular (backup that my wife uses):

Exact same issues as above, minus the cellular related problems.
Not quite as bad on the whole system hanging. Not quite as jerky when typing.

IPad 2 16GB w/Non activated verizon cellular (Our band's digital mixer controller):

Same problems as above, minus cellular issues

Seems to be the best of the bunch, but there is NOTHING loaded on it.  One app that is not from Apple.

Still at least 2x slower than it was with IOS 7x

My iPad is the worst of the bunch, and I use it heavily for work.  I can restore to IOS 7, but I cannot restore my backup from the desktop or the cloud....   It fails.   My only choice has been to go back to IOS 8 and restore my data, which seems to be a LITTLE better than after the initial update.  But still totally unacceptable.   At the point I thought I had bricked it, apple told me that I should consider updating to the latest iPad as it has the power to run the latest IOS.

I'm sorry, but I am not upgrading to the latest because their IOS has all but made my current iPad useless.  No way, if after this debacle I upgrade to something, it will likely be another platform.

Apple needs to get an update to their update out ASAP to help those of us who are screwed by their updates.

Stop defending them.. If this was Microsoft, you would be all over it.   It doesn't matter WHO the company is that causes this much grief, they need to fix it, ASAP!

And in the interest of full disclosure, I have been working with computers since the early 80s.  I am a developer, I have been alpha/beta tester for many products. I have supported many thousand machines/devices, and coordinated updates of hardware/software/firmware for large corporations as well as small/medium businesses, including updates to Windows 98, ME and Vista (as well as 7/8/8.1) and server updates.   I have *NEVER*, not once, not ever, seen a fubar of this magnitude on any update.

I have never seen one so bad that the manufacturer tells me that I need to upgrade hardware, or that my hardware was dead due to an update!

I hope an update to the update is released quickly, because I know that many more thousand, or hundreds of thousands of people cannot enjoy a reliable iPad any longer.

BTW: here's something interesting...      I tried searching for this thread and could not find it... I put in the exact name. No luck.  The only way I was able to get back here was to follow the email link.    Has Apple disabled searching for certain items in the discussions area?????????

cannot say that there is any agenda here, but think about it, let us hope.....and expect that as the years go by that everything evolves, and hopefully, newer and better preformance.  Otherwise we would still be in the horse and buggy....and cars would not be so cool....aren't we all on edge as the new year comes rolling out for the new technology?.....it happens and thankfully should....it does not fix our issues sadly, it only leaves us behind or we have to get more clever.

No I didn't, but it wouldn't surprise me if you did. The performance issues and glitches seem numerous and varied.

People are reporting the same issues with IOS 8 on their brand new devices.  This is why the update was pulled. Brand new iPhone 6s with similar issues, right out of the box.

Regarding old/obsolete hardware - let's look at it like this.   To allow the update to take place to say an iPad 2, without a warning that says you can install the update, but it may affect performance, is almost criminal. And is negligent at the least.

A simple pop up when you go to install the IOS on your old device would suffice:   "You will experience slow performance if you proceed with this update.   INSTALL?   CANCEL?    VISIT OUR SITE AND BUY A NEW IPAD?".

Problem solved, right?   Most people would say, "well heck, I don't want slower." and not install it.  SOME would install anyway.

More people might visit the website and order a new device 8-)

Experiencing exactly the same issues with my iPad 2. According to Apple, the easiest way to fix it is to purchase a newer iPad. [/snark]

Thanks for your reply!......your views make sense to me.....now I see on the business channels it is widespread. I am very surprised this is an issue on the NEW devices, right out of the box....if that is indeed the case then what is up with that rollout????   whoever made that call....should be gone....period.....no excuses.  If only we would demand the same of our government officials we elect.

I would advise you downgrade back to iOS 7 as the apple servers are still allowing this. Follow the instructions here:

    http://www.tomsguide.com/us/apple-ios-8-7-downgrade,news-19613.html

You'll need to use iTunes for this.
