Q: iPhone 6 not counting flights of stairs

Isn't iPhone6 meant to track flight of stairs climbed? Health app showing steps but not flights. Anyone else noticed this ?

Yes this is really a strange one, tried this on a 6+ today, same issue. However today, no data was recorded. The phone was in my pocket with cell & wifi access all day with multiple flights of steps climbed but nothing recorded to health. Steps were recorded today and generally seem to be somewhat accurate. Not sure what is going on with the gyroscope (if it is that which is causing the issue) on flights climbed. Hoping to get more info from the bug I filed soon on this, even if the answer is that this is tied to the HealthKit bugs that were being worked. At least then we would know not to worry about potential HW issues. We can confirm using Argus and others (that access the M8) that steps is working but no apps currently (that I am aware of) track flights of stairs therefore cannot sanity check that piece.

I've been testing and testing this myself, but AFAICT the phone needs to be asleep. I've paced around the house and up and down stairs with the phone awake and the Health app open, but aside from a few steps, I don't see any change. If I put the phone to sleep and walk around, then check afterward, the steps are recorded.

I can't find anything about this feature in the user guide either.

i'm in the exact same boat -- steps was working on my 5S, restored a backup thereof onto a new 6, and suddenly no steps (or anything).  Seems like a bug.

Update: I rebooted the phone (home + lock) and it's as though the M8 released all the data it's been hanging onto -- today's motion is suddenly 12.88 miles.

I've tried restarting mmultiple times and it's still not working. I tried holding lock and home. I also have tried holding lock and swiping to turn off. Still no data!

Mine is working now while going on errands, even when screen on. I guess I was wrong.

My 6 is tracking steps & stairs, but it is very inaccurate with the stairs. I found that if I take each stair going up it seems to catch it better. Unfortunately that is not the way I walk up stairs....I take two stairs at a time. It only seldom registers that I have climb a flight when I do this. It appears that it is a combination of pressure change and stepping that gets it to register...at least my guess. The other day I ran up and down the stairs 6 times in a row, for exercise and not because i'm mental, and it didn't record any of them. The steps counting seems to be pretty good though.

Is this function specific to the m8 chip?  I have iPhone 5S and I'm getting nothing under "flights climbed" but I am getting steps and distance.

Its part of the barometer function of the new iPhone 6's so no a 5s would not be expected to record flights climbed

Count me in, for my iPhone shows 1 flight of stairs for any number of stairs I climb at multiple times throughout the day (avg.: 3 - 5). It shows only 1 every day.

Thx.  Odd that they'd show the tool if my hardware can't use it.  Or even not tell me that it won't work.

Anyone has updated to the last 8.0.2 and checked if it fixes the issues?

Yes trying it now on 8.0.2 and still seems the same. Steps recording fine, Flights Climbed seems to update once in every so many flights. What is interesting since the update is that in the Show All Data it shows previously imported Flights Climbed as Source = Health whereas at the time and even new recorded flights shows as Source = iPhone.

I even updated Argus (just updated to new version today) that looks at flights of stairs in its widget and same thing, its clearly accessing the data from health therefore showing the same inaccurate Flights Climbed data

At this time it would appear that either there is some potential calibration issue with regards to the barometer or maybe it is software related (in how it interprets the barometer data) and just not been fixed yet. Hope of course its the latter not the former, as if this is HW related with the barometer not sure if that can be re-calibrated with software or if in fact its a true hardware calibration problem.

For reference I tried stairs with both the health app open and phone in hand, then health app open and phone in pocket. After this, tested again but with phone at home screen in both positions (pocket and hand) as well as screen off.

Share what you are seeing after the update.

I haven't seen an update on the bug yet but will let you know if I see anything there as well

    Thanks

I'm having similar issues. My 5s was recording steps + distance walked/ran just fine until I got my iPhone 6 on Monday.

After switching to iPhone 6, none of my health data transferred over (except for Medical ID info), and the iPhone 6 hasn't been tracking any of my steps, distance, or flights climbed (this is with iOS 8.0).

Tonight I updated to 8.0.2 (skipping 8.0.1 since there were problems reported) and it still isn't recording steps / distance / flights climbed. My health data has still not transferred over, either in case it was supped to with iCloud.

When I go to the health data details and choose "Show All Data", I just get a spinner that goes on forever. None of the data points ever display. Again, this is with 8.0.2.

I'm stumped. Anyone else experiencing this since the update?
