First, startup using Safe Boot, which does some repairs while starting. Just restart normally after that finishes. (And try adding a printer after that):
OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
If that hasn't helped, try Resetting the Printing System:
OS X Mavericks: Reset the printing system
Then try adding the printer.

Sep 25, 2014 6:40 PMby hilfy11,Thank you very much. The safe boot worked, especially after I turned off the printer and unplugged the printer cable before rebooting in normal mode. Once I restarted in normal, I turned on the printer and plugged in the cable, and voila, printer recognized. Appreciate the help.
