Sep 26, 2014 9:40 PM in response to Heavin1205by ssschmidt,iPhone 4 can only be updated to iOS 7 (7.1.2). The iPhone 4s is the oldest phone that can run iOS 8. Sorry.

Feb 17, 2016 8:27 AM in response to Heavin1205by gillfromtowcester,My iphone is useless too now, as several apps requires version 8 or 9. Considering I have only had the phone 2 years this is not acceptable!!!

Feb 17, 2016 9:02 AM in response to gillfromtowcesterby Rudegar, one can always download the last supported app version if the app developer allow it
if the app developer does not allow it then you should tell the app developer that it is not acceptable, most of them have contact info in app store

Feb 17, 2016 9:12 AM in response to Rudegarby gillfromtowcester,It does appear that the iphone 4 is not included in any software updates since ios 7. That's a good idea. Certainly mapmyfitness and gourmet... only work properly with the latest versions. Thank you for your suggestion. I will contact them individually.

Why (and where) did you buy an obsolete phone to begin with? The iPhone 4 was discontinued in September or 2013. It got the update to iOS 7 in 2013. It did not get the updates to iOS 8 or 9 in 2014 and 2015.
If you want to run newer software, you're going to buy a newer phone.

Feb 17, 2016 10:47 AM in response to KiltedTimby gillfromtowcester,I think I got my Iphone in August 2013 so towards the end of its run. I take your point, and I may have to buy a new phone if I want to use more modern apps, but given that I hardly use my mobile phone for phone calls or anything else, it does make one wonder about the usefulness of Apps /Iphones etc - if they have an effective 'use by' date because the developers won't allow upgrades on the software after 2-3 years, they become very expensive luxuries.

Feb 17, 2016 11:09 AM in response to gillfromtowcesterby KiltedTim,The relatively utility and value of any device is in the eyes of the beholder. It may be that a smart phone is not the right choice for you. If you still want apps, etc. maybe an old fashioned flip phone and an iPod Touch would be a more practical option.

Jul 29, 2016 12:22 PM in response to Socyby KiltedTim,What version of iOS are you running now? If you're running 7.1.2, then you most likely have a 4, not a 4S. The 4 can not run anything higher than 7.1.2.
