Q: need to reset iCloud.com password, not Apple ID. They are not the same

I have an Apple ID that works. I need to reset my iCloud account because I don't remember the password. I have read to delete the iCloud account and create a new one. The old account can't be deleted, because it asks me to log in first. I understand that iCloud is linked to Find my Phone, and you don't want a thief to reset your account. I have been given instructions to reset my Apple ID. My Apple ID is not the same as my iCloud.com username.

    Hello deweycheatemandhowe,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

Since your iCloud login is different than the Apple ID you use for the Store, you can still reset it on the Apple ID reset password website, as the accounts are treated the same.  Below are links for you to reset your password for your iCloud account, as well as a link that describes how you can either use one Apple ID for both services, or multiple Apple ID's.

Thanks, Alex, I went to the Apple ID website and logged in. I see a page to "Manage Name, ID, and e-mail." I did not see anywhere to reset the iCloud e-mail account. I tried to add the iCloud e-mail address on the Add Alternate e-mail address block, then chose Add. The error message was "E-mail address is already verified for another Apple ID."

I understand that the iCloud account is linked to Find my Phone, and I know Apple can't reset it for everyone that asks. If your device is stolen and the iCloud address is reset, then the thief could unlock the phone and turn off the Find my Phone.

    Hello deweycheatemandhowe,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

The iCloud login you are using is an Apple ID.  In your case, as mentioned in the article above, you are using two different Apple ID's.  One is for iTunes, and the other is for iCloud.  The reason you are not able to add your iCloud email address to your other Apple ID, is because Apple ID's cannot be merged.  To reset the password for your iCloud account, please follow the steps in the article I mentioned in my previous reply.  You will be entering in your iCloud email, to reset that account.

Thanks, Alex. I didn't know that you could insert the iCloud address. Now the problem is that it takes hours for the reset password e-mail to arrive. I missed the 3 hour limit and the link expired. I don't really need the iCloud account but the phone prompts me for the login every time I unlock the phone.

    Hi deweycheatemandhowe,

The email should arrive instantly to reset your password, but if you continue to have issues with resetting the password, please contact Apple in your country from the support article linked to below for assistance.
