Q: Unable to Stream Music Over Cellular Data


I just got my new iPhone 6.  There appears to be a problem with the music app being unable to stream music over cellular data.  It basically ignores the setting in Setting / Cellular / Use Cellular Data For / Music, and will only stream over wifi.

 

I can download,individual songs if I deliberately choose download and accept the cellular data warning, but then it will stop playing and not download the next song.

 

If I turn the Use Cellular Data setting off, it always returns to on (green selected) the next time I check the setting, even if I close the app and reboot the phone.

 

Regardless of what the setting is, the Music app will not allow me to stream music over cellular data.

 

Anyone else have this issue?

The setting you need to modify is within iTunes & App Store. If you enable Use Cellular Data, you will be able to stream music from iCloud.

    Hi Hagret - thanks for the reply.  You are correct.  Confusing to have a similar setting under Cellular that doesn't appear to work, but this resolves the issue.  Thanks again.

    For me this really doesn't solve the issue because turning that setting on means that you use cellular data for streaming Apple Music AND automatic downloads of app updates.  Automatic downloads can be quite huge, considering every 3-4 days I have about 5-10 apps updates.  I would really like the setting to be more granular and specific to Apple Music in that it allows streaming/syncing/downloading over cellular data just for Apple Music, and doesn't cross over with the other Apple services.

    Not sure your question is identical to mine, other than to confirm when I am on my mobile/away from home and using my cellular data, the delivery of actual music is nothing short of pathetic.

     

    While I won't get into the relative patchiness of UK networks generally, the benchmark is my paid for Spotify service.

     

    It appears that Apple prioritise the display of album artwork over music. Which is daft! It consistently will load all the other fluff before it starts the tune. It buffers a very short time in advance (so dropping from 4G to 3G and even Edge/GPRS) pretty much terminates the music play.

     

    This wouldn't be too bad if we were talking 1 or two times a day, but its pretty much impossible for me to complete a journey ANYWHERE at ANY TIME without the play dropping out/disconnecting and me having to unlock the phone, find out where the playlist was and start again. While driving, which is patently dangerous.

     

    Compare this with Spotify, not only does it manage the connection better, it buffers considerably further into the 'future' so if I do get a drop in connection, Spotify doesn't notice. Apple Music is a nightmare by comparison.

     

    Getting into my car now to start a journey, I pretty much eliminate Music from my choice simply as I know it will fall over. Soon.

     

    I know I am not alone in this, just scanning the forums its a big problem.

     

    Apple need to have a serious think about what they prioritise, look and feel means nothing if I can't get it to work.
