Q: Machine running extremely slow

I am noticing my machine is running extremely slow. Even with out any Apps open my system memory is only at around 30% so not sure where the band width hog is? Looking at the activity monitor there are allot of things going on / most of which I do not know what they are.

I just ran an EtreCheck - does anyone here know of a way I can stream line my system to run faster and not chock so much?

Thanks

Linc Davis - OMG - thank you / thank you / thank you ~ for this detailed reply and outlined steps / This is HUGE and I will definitely make your recommendations. I need to get through some work before I can apply this but I will follow up with the results once Im in the clear.

etresoft - Yeah ~ I could definitely remove some of the older adobe software but I like to keep at least one version around in case of file compatibly issues. Frankly, some of the older versions are better designed anyway - for some reason reason adobe (among other software companies) insists on screwing with a good thing and often eliminate very useful features in the name of ‘progress ?’ - but in reality its entirely in the name of ca$h. I wish software didn’t have to reinvent the wheel every time / it would save allot of headache for people - especially for us that rely on it the most. Anyway… sorry for the rant.

As for the computer ~ I wasn’t aware of any additional startup items besides the ones listed as cold-fusion and MySQL ~ I have since removed those / are there others I should be aware of?

For browsers... I like Chrome however I am a little uneasy about using it due to what I recently heard about the spyware it injects in your system. I guess they say its for “automated updates” but any software that does updating without consent of the user is a little creepy in my opinion. Its bad enough they already know everything about me / I don’t need to have them also make decisions on my behalf as well! I was warned about this particular system launch injection called “com.google.keystone.agent.plist”. I’m not sure how this can be removed and really how harmful it is but I just don’t like it and choose to boycott Chrome until they take a more hands off approach to their users. “Some” privacy would be nice though I know this does not exist in this day and age. As for Safari - not sure its much different ~ but as much as I love apple products I don’t want to be married to them. Firefox has been my go to for years as I like its flexibility and huge amount of plugin features - but the memory usage is jaw dropping and I will most likely need to make the switch as a result ~ hmmmm maybe Opera(?) - if they still exists?

And as much as I would LOVE a new machine, I simply don’t have the budget. This one is already maxed out with RAM so maybe a new solid state hard drive is an option but not sure a hard drive would improve the overall performance much?

Anyway ~ anyone interested in buying a brand new / slightly used 2009 Macbook Pro? Always happy to trade up

You shouldn't remove any of those items by hand. I don't know what will happen, but it probably won't be good. I was referring to the rumours that the forthcoming OS X version 10.10 "Yosemite" will no longer support startup items. No one outside of Apple knows if that is really going to happen, but Apple did declare startup times deprecated in 2006. Apple usually goes about 9 years from declaring something deprecated to actually removing and/or disabling it. All of the developers who sell software using those technologies then blame Apple for "breaking" their software with only 9 years notice.

MySQL is a special case since it is open source and running on borrowed time to begin with. You can easily create a launchd script for MySQL. I have no idea about Adobe products.

Unfortunately, Safari is strictly a niche product that really wouldn't exist at all if Apple didn't mandate its use on iOS. Like it or not, Chrome is the new IE - the de facto standard internet browser. Opera does still exist but it is now a WebKit-based product just like Chrome and Safari. Firefox is quickly turning into the "legacy" browser that developers hate dealing with, the other side of IE.

And as much as I would LOVE a new machine, I simply don’t have the budget. This one is already maxed out with RAM so maybe a new solid state hard drive is an option but not sure a hard drive would improve the overall performance much?

An SSD will definitely improve performance. You may not have any choice if that is the original hard drive in your machine. Those 2.5" notebook hard drives tend to fail after 3 years. Your particular model of MacBook Pro was not known for its reliability.
