Q: Apple 'Software Update' is corrupted

Apple 'Software update' is corrupted!

I am running Mavericks OSX 10.9.4 on an iMac

Have just purchased an iPhone 6 and wanted to restore the settings and content from an older iphone.

iTunes alerted me that i needed itunes 11.4 so I tried to upgrade.

I was linked to the Apple Software Update page and proceeded to click on the OSX 10.9.5 update

Nothing happened. I repeated this and even clicked on the iTunes 11.4 update again nothing happened.

It goes through the routine but no update takes place.

The whole ‘App Store updates’ appears to be corrupted. OSX 10.9.4 is installed yet it wants to install 10.9.4

It says iTunes 11.4 needs to be installed yet it says it is installed when actually iTunes ‘about' reveals 11.3.

It also lists Mac OSX 10.9.5 the most recent update as installed yet only 10.9.4 is installed

Messages that appear are :

- An Error has Occurred. Can’t load data from the Apple software server.

- The file couldn’t be saved because you do not have permission (513)

My attempt at addressing this was to try and install 10.9.4 Group (downloaded not through App Store but from the Mac support website) with no success.

I then did a Command R reboot. Went to utilities and looked at the permissions. A long list of problems were displayed mainly consisting of  ‘ACL found but not expected….’

I ran permissions repair which showed the repairs as being completed but when I re-ran the verify, the same long list of problems were displayed.

Permissions repair is not working even though it says it is.

Something is very wrong and i do not know hou to resolve this. Any advice would be appreciated.

All files have been backed up in bootable back up format.

Did you know that you have posted this plethora of stuff (a good thing for we helpers) in Using Apple Support Communities (how to use this website) ?? Probably one reason that I have just now stumbled upon your question(?)

Transfer stuff from your old iPhone to your new iPhone 6, is that it? I will ask our gracious Hosts to move this thread to the proper forum for your question - Using iPhone - Not my area, so I comment on it no further.

You will likely get a response when that happens. Until you get some specific help, know that the SiteWare for this forum and other Apple web-based functions seem to be misbehaving intermittently. Be patient and retry and you may succeed in your endeavors

What shows as the version in Apple > About this Mac?

Have you tried getting the update via this page:

    http://www.apple.com/support/osx/software-updates/

My attempt at addressing this was to try and install 10.9.4 Group (downloaded not through App Store but from the Mac support website) with no success.

Are you referring to the "Combo" updates?

    ‘ACL found but not expected….’

You can safely ignore those messages.

Mac OS X: Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions messages that you can safely ignore

As most of your questions are in regards to the OS, I've asked to have this moved to the OS Mavericks forum.

Thank you for looking at this and your response. Yes I have tried the combo Version of both the 10.9.4 and the 10.9.5 with no success.

I Will try your link but hold out little hope. ..... I have got the download been taken through the full 'Install OSX Update menu sequence, selected the destination disc for this 1.95GB update etc entered my password as an admin user clicked install software read the 'you will have to restart your computer etc ' message clicked 'continue installation' it starts to instal for about 1sec then stops and asks me to click the restart button.

I Then click restart which the iMac does. I check the updated and it lists it as done but it has not.

This his has been the routine thus far for all my attempts.

MAvericks i.e. The software update part is in some damaged such that any update attempt does not work.

yes please do move this feed to the Mavericks forum. It's been ages since I needed any help Hence this error.

There appear to be two choices here: either the installer is borked and/or your system is. I'd seriously consider using recovery; you said that it would install 10.9.4 - that's fine if it does. Use the Disk Utility to repair permissions and the hard drive (just as an added precaution). Then choose to reinstall - this should replace all system files so you should have a clean OS (your files will not be touched, but make sure you have a backup anyway). Then try the combo updater again.

If it persists, then I'd go for the Internet Recovery - Hold Command + Option + R. Once in the Utilities screen, choose Disk Utility and erase your hard drive (you WILL lose all data with this) and then reinstall the OS.

For either of these: make sure you have no peripherals attached except mouse and keyboard. Turn off firewall and/or FileVault. Turn off or, better, delete any AV or third party "clean my mac" type software.

    Thanks again.

I Am not great at this stuff so can I walk you through the issue again and what I will do next.

    just be clear.

No I have not been able to install 10.9.4.

I have not been able to install or update anything since I backed up the old iPhone ready to do a reinstall into the new one 2 days ago. Which is when the problem revealed itself.

the iMac is used for graphic design and all those functions appear to be working fine.

I have done a full bootable backup. So all docs are safe.

    so the next step.

reboot holding the R key. Go to utilities and repair permissions and repair the disc. ( I have already done this and noted that the repairIngrid of the permissions though stated by the software actually did not occur. It goes through the process but without any changes.)

then select the reinstall of the system OSX 10.9.4. Or should I go straight for 10.9.5 ?

does this route bypass the normal system installer ?

next step if that fails then go down the drastic route of deleting the HD. Fills me with horror .....

    Something just occurred to me:

Exactly what model/year Mac and which OS version came with it?

(If it is very recent, then your choices may be slightly different because your build may be newer than what is available as an update - if that is the case, you can't update your Mac until one or two builds later after it "catches up".)

For now, just so you know:

    reboot holding the R key.

Just holding R does nothing (that I know of). It's Command + Option + R for the Internet Recovery; the new Macs will automatically boot into Internet Recovery even if you just hold Command + R (usually referred to as local recovery and an option depending on the model/year/age of the Mac).

    Some info on it:

    27-inch, Mid 2010

Processor  2.93 GHz Intel Core i7

    Memory  8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

Graphics  ATI Radeon HD 5750 1024 MB

    Serial Number  CK03817CDNR

    Software  OS X 10.9.4 (13E28)
if the disc utility does an action such as repairing permissions, states that it is completed and when checked obviously has not done a thing then I suspect I have a problem.
Thanks again ... Will let you know how I get on.

So you have the same iMac I have which means the new OS version theory does not apply.

As for repairing permissions, 90% of the time I've run it throughout all the years I've owned Macs, most of the messages did not disappear. That does NOT necessarily mean you have a problem.
