Q: My Airport Extreme intermittently shuts down completely.

My Airport Extreme (newest model) will shut down completely, all by itself, with the green light completely off.  When I unplug and replug the device, it starts again and the green light comes back on after it boots.  It's as if a "circuit breaker" cuts off the power.  No other equipment shuts off, so it's not the electric outlet.

well it never happens to me if I use at the new AE stand-alone.... however once I connect several devices (new AE, old AE and a time capsule) to the "main" AE via ethernet the main one starts shutting down every 24-48h. I have checked the moment it shuts down and it does not feel hot at all. it just powers off.

If I interchange and put the other last generation AE as the "main" one the same happens.... my only solution now is having a timer and shut it off at night myself with the timer..... very very frustrating.

I just purchase an Apple Extreme about a month ago using firmware 7.73 and have the same shutdown issues. Every 24 -48 hours it shuts down.  Got a replacement from Apple store so on my second one and it is doing the same thing.  Spoke to apple support and they seem to have no clue.

i just started having the same problem. i purchased the unit in august of this year (2014) and when i decided to run my 2010 mac mini directly connected to AE instead of on wifi 24 hours later my AE was turned off completely and i had to unplug it and plug it back in for it to work. as long as i was running everything on wifi i never had the problem only until i decided to run my mac directly to it is when it started acting up. if you're running anything directly to it try connecting them to the modem or wifi and see if that fixes the problem. if it happens again to me i will go back to running wifi on my mac and if it happens again then I'm returning the unit for exchange of another one and i hope by that time they have something newer and better.

I am having the same issue with intermittent power downs (light off). Removing the power cable and plugging it back in temporarily resolves the issue. I have two ethernet cables plugged in: one going to the modem and one to a desktop. The shut downs happen 3-4 times a week. Is it even worth having Apple replace it, if the issue is so common?

i think its  common. it has happened to me 4 times in the past 20 days of use. maybe a firmware issue. lets wait on watch.

I have the same problem. I'm on my 2nd and out to be 3rd AE.  It shuts constantly.

It's very disappointing that an Apple Rep hasn't addressed this thread.  Guess they are too busy making $$ on the iPhone 6, to help with their other faulty products.

I'm on my 3rd Extreme also.  Within 24 hours of install of my third extreme I had another shut down.   I Wondered if the internal power supply is sensitive to voltage variations or a negative ground issues and shuts it self down.  So now I have it plugged it into a 800 Joule  surge protector instead of a direct connection to the outlet.  Seems to have fixed the issue as I have gone over a week now with no shut downs.  Hope this helps others with the shut down issue.

Sure sounds like a bad batch.  I purchased the Airport Extreme, sixth gen. in July 2013 and have never had any type of service outage, hardware or firmware.
