Q: Pages doesn't open ALL old docs.

Pages 5.2.2 won't open all my old MS word docs. It opens some, but not all. Why? I'm using OS 10.9.5.

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

It won't open RTF anymore, and can be fussy about circa 2000 or earlier Word documents. Suggest you download the free LibreOffice (all installed as single app in /Applications), and feed your Word documents to it as a test. The version of the operating system makes no difference, and Pages v5.2.2 was never intended to be a Word clone, (or even a Pages ’09 clone) either.

Thanks for your interest in my problem. I'm not sure if i was clear about the problem.  Pages opens some, but not all msword docs. why some and not all. In your response you mentioned "RTF". I don't know what you mean. I was using MSWord 2004 (I think). I would try your suggestion, but when i went to d/l they were asking for $$. it was not free and i'm leary about forking over $$ for something (and some entity) i know nothing about.

One of Microsoft's document formats is Rich Text Format, or RTF for short. These documents have a .rtf filename extension, and Pages v5.2.2 no longer opens these. Pages 5.2.2 opens most of my MS Word 2001 and later documents.

Apple did not write Pages v5.2.2 to work natively in MS Word (.doc/x) document format. As neither a Word clone, or viable replacement, it must translate the MS Word document content into Apple's proprietary .pages document architecture. If there is a mismatch in this translation, because Pages v5.2.2 does not support some feature in a particular MS Word document, it will either perform a horrible translation, or simply give up and not open the document. No one knows for certain why some of your documents do not open. If you need native MS Word document compatibility, then acquire Office for Mac 2011.

LibreOffice is free to download. They would like a donation, but that is optional. I have it installed on my OS X 10.9.5 machine, and did not pay for it. There is a slight pause after it displays that donation page, and before the actual download starts. Wait for it. Ignore the donate page. By one name or another, the technology within LibreOffice got started in 1995, and has been in continuous development ever since. I have opened Word documents with it that even MS Word would not open.
