Q: Will an iPad 2 be upgradable to iOS 8?

I have an iPad first gen that only was upgradable to iOS 5.11.  I am thinking about getting a refurbished 2nd Gen.  Will that be upgradable to iOS 8 when it comes out this Fall, or should I look for a newer refurb gen like a 3rd or Air?

iPad, iOS 5.1.1

ios 8 has been a complete disaster for countless numbers of iPad2 users yet Apple keeps relatively silent on the issue. Many switched from Microsoft to Apple because they were tired about faulty system updates. Now many of us may well be looking for an Apple alternative. Very disappointing.

I Can only agree! All my gadgets are based on Apple flatform. From MacBook to iPad, iPod, iPhone, and Apple TV. Since the release of this new iOS 8 and its upgrades throughout the whole apple network of iDevices everything went horrendously slow. Wifi kept dropping, watching films on iTunes or netflix are becoming  rather painful considering my internet connection is approx 20meg, Apple tv and iPad are very sluggish to navigate, and yeah, it is absolutely FRUSTRATING!!! I nearly smashed my iPad yesterday, and with that, I am slowly switching back to an alternative platform... my iPhone is now officially retired to being a permanent fixture on my cardash as a satnav and I've switched over to LG G3 and android. I'm not too keen on andriod and windows but it's a step forward since the passing of Steve Jobs. My enthusiasm for Apple iDevices has died with him I reckon. Steve's innovation, creativity, and vision (unfortunately) had to go with him...All these issues/imperfection may have been minimised if he was around...he would not dare release a problematic application of software --period!

Amen!  I have anPad Mini and regret installing iOS 8.  When in Safari, the iPad keyboard no longer keeps up with my typing like it did with iOS7.  When I perform a search in Safari the links to my search results do not work unless I force quit then reopen Safari.  Things also run much slower now since updating to iOS 8.  This is the Apple version of Windows XP.  Pathetic!

HAs anyone contacted Apple regarding possibly downgrade to version 7?  I tried sending a message to tech support but got bumped out.

APple should know that IPad2 owners are having problems with their last release, they should do something to help, to simply release a version that in not compatible with one of their products and not provide a solution to help us, is bad business.  If they did regression testing prior release 8 they would have seen that the version was not entirely compatible with ipad2.  Unless of course they were counting on alll those with older devices to throw them away and upgrade to a new Apple product.  Bad bad bad...

I Have the same problem since I upgrade my IPad 2 retina. This is the worst upgrade I never do. Don't try to have any answer from Apple services it is almost impossible to reach someone. The Apple sites are very good to sell you something but the service forget it. I am a big fan of Apple product but I believe the service died with Mr Job.

using iOS 8.0.2 on iPad mini is an incredible new experience!

THanks a lot Apple for the time I'm wasting trying to live with the new bugs & problems you developed.

Next time pls, advice people that a major update might mean first frustration and consequently...

I am asking myself the same thing---why did I upgrade (which wound up being more of a downgrade). I knew I should wait to see if people had problems with the new system. Now I am experiencing many of the same problems. Yes, you can install IOS 8 on an IPad 2, but why would you after reading all the comments here? It doesn't sound like it's only the IPad 2 that is negatively affected by the new system either.

I seem to recall similar issues when Apple brought out iOS 7 and I predicted similar for iOS 8 and no doubt when iOS9 is unleashed in the future we'll see similar issues.

Such was the outcry around iOS 7 I left my iPad 3 running on iOS6 because it was running fine with no issues and still is and given the current (predicted) problems surrounding iOS8 there is no way will I risk bricking a perfectly good and functioning iPad....they cost too much!!

If people are compelled for whatever reason to update then it may be worth waiting for version 8.1 as by then it is hoped that all the bugs that were present in the initial update(s) would have been ironed out.

I never thought I'd say this but it is now official, I hate my iPad! All because of iOS 8, it is now a piece of crap. I cannot believe we haven't heard anything from Apple about how to fix issues with the iPad 2.

this issue is not limited to iPad 2, it is across the iDevices not named iPhone 6. All my apple devices are stupidly slow now and frustrating to use. My iPad 3 annoys me every time I use it. it keeps hanging and touch screen is always delayed to react. I will take a video of it and upload it on you tube soon...

Agree...my iPad 2 is basically useless after installing iOS 8. Out of desperation I proceeded with 8.02 in hopes that it would revive my iPad 2, but it still crashes, glitchy at best and so slow it useless....If I have to replace this tablet because of this iOS, you can be sure that it will not be an Apple product! Apple needs to address this issue, allow us to go back to iOS 7.12 or FIX iOS8!

I wonder, if I put my iPad back to the factory default and then update to iOS 8, will it make a difference? If I have to get a new tablet, it will not be an iPad either. I paid enough for my iPad 2 3G and right now I am sick of Apple.

i updated to 8.02 for the same reason, thinking it would fix or at least improve the functionality but nothing changed, it is still frustratingly slow, i get a blank page for maybe 20+ seconds before something pops up, even with the photos icon.  And google search has become the most annoying with the keyboard jumping all over the place and bringing up weird info, if i type 'r' in my search field it will display 'redbox' - just that... I don't even know what redbox means.
