Q: FileVault is stuck in "Connect power adapter" state

I had told FileVault to encrypt my drive, it told me to connect a power adapter. I waited too long and eventually the computer hibernated.

The following day, computer working fine, I go into preferences to see where FileVault is at. I am currently have the power adapter plugged in, my laptop is now 100% charged.

FileVault seems to be stuck. It still says "Connect power adapter to resume encryption", even though I am on power. "Turn Off FileVault..." tells me I must wait until FileVault has completed to disable.

Any thoughts?

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It makes no changes to your data.

Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

{ diskutil list; echo; diskutil cs list; } | pbcopy

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.

Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.

Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.

Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear below what you entered.

The output of the command will be automatically copied to the Clipboard. If the command produced no output, the Clipboard will be empty. Paste into a reply to this message.

The Terminal window doesn't show the output. Please don't copy anything from there.

If any personal information appears in the output, anonymize before posting, but don’t remove the context.

The conversion is paused, but according to what you say, there's no valid reason for it, so something has gone wrong. If you don't already have a current backup of all data, back up immediately. Then you can try the instructions linked below, but I'm not too optimistic:

Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

    Reset your computer’s PRAM

I have the same issue macbook pro mid-2012.  768 HD. Shows encryption bar full blue but says encryption paused and plug into resume if I am plugged in or not.  Does not seem to want to auto sleep (with default energy settings), not sure that is related.  When on battery, it says filvault is biggest battery user (converting to FileVault), but does not say this when plugged in.  Does not seem to effect system performance.

Not sure if my disks are encrypted or not and I hope apple comes up with a fix for this soon. Is there a place where we should be reporting to apple these issues?

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

Having the same issue on my MacBook Pro. Have tried:

    • Unplugging / replugging in power adapter
    • Different power adapters
    • Restarting the MacBook
    • Running "sudo fdesetup status"

All do not resolve the issue.

Apple when will this be fixed!

I had the same issue and spent all of yesterday trying to fix it. Unfortunately, my computer was too slow to do anything at all except when on recovery mode. You can start the process of decrypting your files even if the encryption is not fully completed using disk utility in recovery mode by following the steps on this website:

    http://derflounder.wordpress.com/2011/11/23/using-disk-utility-to-unlock-or-decr ypt-your-filevault-2-encrypted-boot-drive/

    Hope this helps!

I have the same issue - on a new retina iMac 5k. Obviously no battery incolved so the bug is not limited to systems where the power can actually be removed. Various single user mode fixes didn't help so I guess i will back up, format and restore next and try again....

    this his is on Yosemite.

same situation here. latest macbook pro 13" retina. IMHO a serious bug in osx and apple has to fix it cuz it uses a lot of power anytime.

I also have this exact issue. Brand new macbook pro, running Yosemite, first boot, with a very similar output from Linc's Terminal. This is extremely frustrating.
