Q: iOS8 update bricked dead my iphone 4s (error 29) - restore to 7.1.2 not working

IOS 8.0 update OTA to my 4S has killed the device. After the initial attempt failed I tried via iTune Restore and got Error 29.

Attempts to restore to an older version (7.1.2) failed as well. Same error.

The phone is stuck in the familiar "connect to iTunes" screen.  

 

Has iOS8 destroyed my phone?

    apple stop signing with Ios 7.1.2, you cant downgrade anymore.

    I saw this today. But it was not the case a few days ago.

     

    In any case, the new 8.0.2 does not fare better. Got Error 29 again

    (on 2 PC's, 3 cables, with firewall on and off)

     

    It seems that Apple new iOS8 has literally destroyed my iPhone 4S.

    Big :-( :-(

     

    Still looking for answers :-)

    Have you found any answers? Unfortunately Im in the same boat  and nothing so far works i've tried everything and I mean EVERYTHING from battery replacement to irecovery (yes I know Apple don't approve, but what are your options when they don't offer up any suggestions of how to fix the phone other than try and blame some external factors rather than take responsibility for an update that has destroyed my phone)

     

    Rant over, if anyone has a fix it would be greatly appreciated, fingers crossed there is an actual apple 'genius' out there.

    I actually solved the problem. I read about error 29 that battery connections inside the phone is one of the many issues that can cause it . (Talk about unhelpful error messages, Apple are trying to match Microsoft, it seems)

    Although my 4S seemed to be working perfectly before that, with no battery issues, I tried banging it pretty hard against my palm a few times.

    Well. It worked.

    After this mistreatment 8.0.2 loaded like a charm. No issues since then.

    It seems that the update is exercising some SW/HW path that is sensitive to some electro- mechanical issue that is not noticeable otherwise.

    That article I have seen over a million times, its where Apple guide you to when the error message pops up! So its pretty safe to say I've done everything the article suggests and it still doesn't work hence why alternative suggestions are being thrown around. The problem is largely that Apple simply do not have a solution for this problem.

     

    Although Apple will harp on about not supporting downgrades or approve people opening up their phones or jailbreaking them, when Apple are providing absolutely no help or recourse online or in-store. People will quite simply take matters into their own hands to get their Apple products working as they should be.

     

    My major issue with this problem is that I haven't damaged my phone, I haven't dropped it in water, smashed it, or anything. If i did I wouldn't mind forking out to have it fixed but this is a problem caused by an Apple update and now Apple have seeming shirked all responsibility and left us to put our heads together to find our own ways of fixing their problem.

    When you contacted Apple support about error 29 what did they tell you?

    Firstly I shared my screen with an Apple tech who did the basics i.e firewalls security etc. Then I went in store where they were totally baffled and thought the phone had been tampered with I told them it hadn't. They just had no ideas or suggestions at all I think they were hoping it was in warranty so they could just replace it but its not.

    So what state is your phone currently in and who replaced the battery? Does it work at all?

    The phone is in its natural state as in the way it was when I bought it. I took it to the Apple store...untampered with and when their conclusion was bugger all. I read that it may be a battery fault so I had the battery replaced (not by an 'Apple genius' but someone with a brain, an iPhone battery, and the relevant screwdriver) the error code still came up so the new battery came out and the original battery went back in and thats the state of the phone at the moment, so back at square one really.

    My son had this same problem when he tried to update the IOS8 on his 4s. On yesterday I took the phone to Apple and of course they blamed the issues on the phone; stating that the phone had and internal problem and would die eventually and the update just sped up the inevitable. Apple's "non" genius informed me that since I didn't have insurance I would need to replace the phone for $200 and I refused.

    Here is what I did.....I researched on youtube and found my solution. I was instructed to 1. Go into my anti-virus protection software ( we use Norton Antivirus) and turn off firewall as this may be blocking communication. Then with your pjone connected to you computer, go back into itunes and click on restore. It restored my son's phone back to factory settings but at least he has a working phone now and hopefully so will you! I hope this information helps someone here.

    So your guy with the brain took the battery out, then put the original one back in because he couldn't diagnose the problem nor fix it either. What does natural state mean? You said your phone is back to the way it was when you bought it. Did you buy it used?

    I'll try and simplify a very basic problem for you as you seem to be confused, while many others aren't (I wouldn't be surprised if you are an Apple 'genius').

     

    Guy with brain and new iPhone battery and relevant screwdriver replaces factory iPhone battery (a factory battery is the battery Apple put in the phone) the factory is replaced with a new battery the iPhone is then plugged in to iTunes to be restored...The error message pops back up again. Thus arriving at the conclusion the battery is not the problem hence why the old battery (the factory battery) goes back in.

     

    The iPhone was not bought used which is why I was confidently able to say to the Apple 'genius' when I went to the store it had not been tampered with when I had arrived at the store, the tampering of my iPhone only ever took place when I left the store with the Apple 'genius' scratching their heads. The 'natural state' I explained clearly in an earlier post as being how the phone was brand new when I bought it brand new.
