Just a quick update with another data point. I tried this with the latest beta (8.1) available to devs and the issue still exists, I ensured this info has been added to the bug as well and also notified Applecare to see if they are aware of this issue.
Thanks

Oct 1, 2014 10:17 AM in response to simlidby Alkor_apple,Thanks Tadd, Apple confirmed the issue I reported and mentioned they are working on a fix, hoping to have something for this Friday. At least they'll check with me then. No workaround offered, just acknowledging the issue and asking to wait for a fix.

Oct 1, 2014 3:08 PM in response to simlidby simlid,Well, using the app that Josh over on the other thread created (to test barometer) it showed I completed 10.548 feet in 1 stair climb I did today. Got the tape measure out and it was about 10.3 feet so thats not bad for accuracy at least according to Josh's app that accesses the barometer. Therefore if the barometer is seemingly pretty accurate maybe this just points to a SW calibration issue with regards to iOS or the health app in particular not registering that as a flight of steps etc ?
Be interested to hear if others are seeing similar after trying this Barometer app.

Oct 2, 2014 3:05 AM in response to simlidby Frank Malloy,Flights climbed was at first consistent and completely accurate for me on the iPhone 6 for the first week and a half. Upgraded to 8.0.2. Starting today, suddenly it stopped recording any new stair flights. Worked in the morning, later stair climbs thru the day were not recorded. It still shows the iPhone as a device. Restart did not fix it. Later in the evening, it started recording a few new climbs correctly.
Even for a few days after installing 8.0.2, it was still recording correctly, only today it started to not work correctly.

Oct 2, 2014 3:49 AM in response to Frank Malloyby declanshortall,I think I may be onto something here. Got my shiny new iPhone 6 yesterday, and like everyone else, no Flights Climbed data being recording in Health even after climbing 2 flights regularly, nor was the iPhone listed as a source. From browsing other topics, I had the idea that the issue could be compass calibration related.
I ran the compass calibration, and then climbed 2 flights. Checked Health and surprisingly it is now recording data.

i tested the app multiple times with an average of 8.5 feet. The measuring tape shows my stairs are 14 feet (not counting the bottom landing). Could I be doing something wrong, or is my phone buggy?

Oct 2, 2014 10:08 AM in response to declanshortallby Frank Malloy,I think you are onto something. My flight counter was working perfectly since I got the iPhone 6, then stopped incrementing the flight count last night. I ran the compass calibration, and it's correctly recorded all the flights since then (only 4, but it's correct).
If it is dependent on proper calibration this could explain it - the compass goes out of calibration after a while so the flight counter stops working.
Will continue to monitor this and periodically re-calibrate.
Thank you!

Oct 2, 2014 1:51 PM in response to simlidby Frank Malloy,I'm using the app - works great and is reliable, unlike the Health app.
I encourage everyone to go into the Compass app and do the recalibration and see if that fixes it.

Oct 3, 2014 5:25 AM in response to Frank Malloyby declanshortall,Glad to be of service :-) We may see this fixed in the next 8.1 Beta, or hopefully by 8.1 GM/Final

Oct 3, 2014 11:28 AM in response to declanshortallby simlid,Hope this is fixed too, tried the compass re-calibration tip listed in the other thread but I am still seeing the same issues on my phone, not tracking at all or when it does, not accurately

Oct 3, 2014 12:03 PM in response to simlidby emanon256,Well, it was working except for short flights. Then I did the compass calibration and its copletly off now. I climbed 3 regular flights of stairs and it didn't count anything, but a few hours later I walked for a mile on a flat road and it believes I climbed two flights of stairs at two separate times during my walk. I downloaded the barometer app and when I put my phone on a flat surface and run it after a few seconds it shows it moving up or down by as much as half a meter. I think the barometer is not working. Where is it in the phone? Is it internal or does it have a port somewhere? Maybe the phone case could be blocking it?

Oct 3, 2014 2:57 PM in response to simlidby Taddd,My iphone6 flights-of-stairs counter is working almost reliably so long as the flight is really tall, i.e. commercial building. I only get # of flights readings in the house once in a while. The health app did seem pretty impressed with my climbing a ladder from my back yard to my roof, however.
The Compass appears to need calibration every time I launch it unless it is already running in the background. I have a hard time believing that the compass is part of the dependancies for the # of flights calculation since stairs come in all shapes (multiple landings, circular, straight, etc), and stairs often live in buildings that have electrical wiring which interferes with the compass function. The stairs at work seem to be metal shielded since cellphone reception becomes really crappy when I'm in the staircase (it's a fire stairs surrounded by cinder-blocks, at least). .

Oct 6, 2014 1:35 AM in response to simlidby teajay_apple,Does step counting works on iPhone 5 in the health app? Or is there any third-party app for it??
-
Oct 6, 2014 2:27 PM in response to teajay_appleby Frank Malloy,Sorry, the iPhone 5 does not have the motion co-processor which was introduced in the 5s. So as I understand it you cannot count steps without an external device/app.
