Q: recovery macbook pro 2011 17inch

Hi everybody

i have an early 2011 macbook pro 17 inch.

i've installed windows 7 with bootcamp and every thing was fine until i converted my disk from basic to dynamic by mistake and such a mistake will make the disk non-bootable.

fortunately i reconverted my disk to basic and ive installed my windows 7 again and it worked properly. i have downloaded OS X Mavericks DVD dmg file as well but when i put the disk in and boot from that in verbose mode it says:

AppleUSBMultitouchDriver::checkstatus - received Status Packet, Payload 2: device was re initialized

still waiting for root device

still waiting for root device

i think it has nothin to do with my touchpad and problem is my disk (tell me if im wrong)

I've deleted all other partitions including windows 7 but the problem is still there and i think its about the disk not formated Journaled for mac os and the only utility for that is Recovery Disk Assistant and its only can be created from another mac device but the problem is i dont have any other mac devices to create that i just have windows and fedora clients and NO OS X !

Internet recovery not working to it shows an error: -2100F

what can i do? is there any way to create one from windows? or download an iso image of one and burn on a dvd so i can boot from that?

thank you for the time you spent

Every Mac computer made before mid 2011 which came originally with Lion came with OS X reinstall discs.

So IF your MBP originally came with Snow Leopard installed it came with system reinstall discs. Whether you ever took them out of the box, before you threw the box away, is an unknown.

You will need those discs or a replacement set you can order from Apple at a small fee.

OP has a 17-in Early 2011 MBP. According to Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery the Early 2011 17-inch MBP can be upgraded to Internet Recovery.

Mac OS X versions (builds) for computers states that both 10.6 and 10.7 builds were sold.

Also Macbook Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.3 states

This update includes improvements delivered in MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.2 that enables Lion Internet Recovery from an Internet connection.

Just because it was upgraded to access internet recovery doesn't mean you can use it to install Lion or future versions of OS X from it. Apple should of never upgraded the firmware to offer internet recovery on those models. Those slightly older Mac's still need the original system reinstall discs that came with them to be able to reinstall OS X on them.

You can't install a version of OS X from internet recovery that did not originally come on a Mac. The only versions of OS X available from internet recovery are Lion, Mt Lion, Mavericks and the future Yo****. Once Yo**** comes out and Mac computer start coming with that version of OS X Pre-Installed.

Whichever version came on your Mac when it was shipped from the factory will be installed when using internet recovery. If it came with Snow Leopard, originally, you NEED THOSE System Reinstall Discs.

Also the Early 2011 models came with both Snow Leopard and Lion Pre-Installed. The early manufactured/released Early 2011 had Snow Leopard. The later manufactured/released Early 2011's, made sometime in the summer of 2011 (Once Lion had come out), came with Lion Pre-Installed.

Which makes this whole thing about reinstalling OS X even more confusing.

I quite agree that it is very confusing. My experience adds to the confusion even more.

On a 2011 Mini, which originally came with ML, I upgraded to Mavericks via App Store (not moving the installer on USBs), and now when I run Command+Opt+R, I am offered Mavericks, not ML. On a similar Mini, where OSX was installed by copying the Installer App (not via App Store), I am still offered ML, so there is some record being kept within Apple Systems on what comes via App Store.

My experience contradicts the following highlighted statement.

From OS X: About OS X Recovery

Which version of OS X is installed by OS X Recovery?

    • If you use the Recovery System stored on your startup disk to reinstall OS X, it installs the most recent version of OS X previously installed on this computer.
    • If you use Internet Recovery to reinstall OS X, it installs the version of OS X that originally came with your computer. After installation is finished, use the Mac App Store to install related updates or later versions of OS X that you have previously purchased.

Right then you are NOT using the Online Internet Recovery System. You are using the Recovery HD partition on the Startup Drive.

    Like what you posted.

If the Mac came with Snow Leopard you need the original reinstall discs.

No Mac from 2011, manufactured in 2011 not model year, came with Mt Lion. Mt Lion didn't come out until 2012.

If you are holding down Command + Option/Alt + r and not getting a spinning globe on the screen then you are not booting from the Online Internet Recovery System. You are booting from the Recovery HD partition. Which as you posted will install the latest version of OS X that WAS, Or Is currently, installed on your drive.

To be completely clear. To reinstall any version of OS X that came on a new Mac before Lion came out you need to have the Original, Model Specific, System Reinstall DVD disc set that came with that model Mac. Or a Replacement set of them that can be ordered from Apple.

I get a spinning globe and then Mavericks.

An Apple refurbished Mac Mini 2011 was shipped with ML. I will verify again.

When your dealing with refurbished units, it can be a little tricky.  If it was purchased late from the initial introduction/discontinuation dates, it may have been shipped with a later OSX than when introduced. New 2011 MBPs did come with Lion installed but that may not be the case with yours.  If you look at the refurbished section on the online web site, often there is no mention of the OSX that will be installed.

    Ciao.

    Ciao.

That seems to be the case. My mini is G0M97LL/A ordered on Dec 4, 2012. This would have been part of the ML Up-to-Date program.
