Oct 5, 2014 7:08 PM in response to Staplesby Kappy,You cannot upgrade to Mountain Lion, but you can to Mavericks provided your computer meets the system requirements:
Upgrading to Mavericks
You can upgrade to Mavericks from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mavericks can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
Upgrading to Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Mavericks from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mavericks is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
As for iPhoto the Mavericks upgrade is 9.5.1 and only works on Mavericks.

When you say 'I seem to be unable to upgrade iphoto9.3 to 9.4.' how are you trying? What happens when you do? Are there any error messages?

Oct 6, 2014 2:38 PM in response to LarryHNby Staples,A friend gave me an iPhoto library to search for good photos for a book. .
I cannot open it with my MacBook10.7.5 and iPhoto 9.3, so I tried to download iPhoto9.4 to see if the library could be opened.
9.4 would download but not open. "Alert. The version of iPhoto installed on this Mac must be updated through the Mac App Store. Check the Mac App Store to see if an update is available." The only update from the Mac App store in 9.5. Too high for my 10.7.5 system.
I have now just found out my friends system is osx10.9.5 and iPhoto version 9.5.1
I think I might be totally stuck.

Oct 6, 2014 2:40 PM in response to Kappyby Staples,Thanks Kappy.
I have been trying to avoid Mavericks because of all the negative comments online.
I specifically do not want to ruin my current use of Adobe inDesign, illustrator, Photoshop CS6 which all run well with my system 10.7.5.

iPhoto 9.4 downloads fine.
Then is says "Alert. The version of iPhoto installed on this Mac must be updated through the Mac App Store. Check the Mac App Store to see if an update is available." The only one in the app store in 9.5 which is too high for my system 10.7.5.
