My iPad is cellular (*NOT* wifi only). In my case, I held off updating my iphone pending a review on my ipad.
That said, unless I was mistaken, I recall seening a number of issues reported here with regards to iphones as well.

Oct 8, 2014 2:51 PM in response to NikChby tom44,Add me to the list too. Ipad is essentially bricked by ios 8.02 and 5ghz problem.
To those whose solution to this is separate out your 2.4ghz and 5ghz networks. A. Why should people do that? B. Apple ought to fix their software C. Most people aren't going to be savvy enough to do this

Oct 12, 2014 6:07 PM in response to Gary Waxmanby jacksonic, uusing airport utility, go to advanced settings, select radio settings, change from < auto > to 2.4, update via save, then change back to < auto > and save again. Also update the < radio channel > settings via same method. The software glitch is that it does not refresh the airport or airport extreme settings

Oct 15, 2014 7:18 AM in response to tom44by waxhawsam,Add me to the list as well, Apple iPad Mini Retina with 8.0.2, 5G drops out, all other devices in my house (Macbook Air's, MBP, Airport express) all connect fine. I am also using a Netgear R7000.
Tom44, to your question about splitting the SSID's, I agree you shouldn't have to do this to fix what looks to be an IOS issue. But as a long time wireless network engineer, I can say there is a good reason to split them. As I am sure most folks know, there is a lot of junk in the 2.4G spectrum, so speeds tend to be slower but you typically get better range. With just the opposite for 5G (although with the new 11AC routers I am seeing fantastic 5G range.) So the benefit of splitting up your SSIDs between 2.4 and 5 is to all you to segregate your network devices. Devices that need maximum bandwidth should be on the 5G, with other devices going on the 2.4.
It's a control thing, if you don't have the need or care, then keep the SSIDs the same and allow all the wireless devices to decide which to connect.

Oct 17, 2014 7:33 AM in response to NikChby rmacintosh, add another iPad Air to the list of WiFi problems. I've had to dust off my dell laptop and put my iPad away as it is no use to me anymore. I highly regret doing the ios8 update
