Q: can't seem to reboot using bootcamp

Hi,

Usually i hold down the ALT (Options) key when restarting my computer and two options come up. One is to boot up the computer using OSX software and the other option is to boot up the computer, in Windows. Now I am just getting two disc icons. One that says, Macintosh HD and the other one says, Recovery.

How do I get access to my Windows files?

Any positive help much appreciated.

    1. What events took place before Bootcamp disappeared?

    2. Please post the output of the following commands (from OSX Terminal).

         a. diskutil list

         b. sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0

         c. sudo fdisk /dev/disk0

    3. If you have more than one drive in the Mac, please ask for appropriate commands (for 2b,2c) after you post the output of 2a.

I should have mentioned that you will be prompted for the Administrative password.

Another suggestion, if you can post text versions using Cut/Paste it would be wonderful, because the Communities have issues with images being visible.

It is your password. By default, the first person to get an account on the Mac is the Administrator.

The "got" should be "gpt" and you need a space between the "-vv" and "-r" .

Triple click on the individual line, cut (command+C) and paste (command+V) into an OSX terminal. Enter your password as necessary

sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0

    sudo dd if=/dev/rdisk0s4 count=1 2>/dev/null | hexdump -C

If this happened with the 10.9.5 upgrade, do you recall if you had a Recovery HD partition before the upgrade? With the assumption that you did, Want to check the output of the dd command, before going further.

The MBR and GPT are in sync and the Windows NTFS header is intact.

Please ignore the i386 boot error message you will see when you run fdisk. If you see any other error messages, please post back.

    sudo fdisk -e /dev/disk0

    Reboot.

Test 1 - Does Bootcamp Volume show up in Finder?

Test 2 - Are files visible in the Bootcamp volume?

Test 3 - Can Bootcamp be selected as a Startup Disk in System Preferences - > Startup Disk?

Test 4 - If Test 3 is successful, click on Restart after selecting Bootcamp.

If you see a hanging underline cursor in top left corner of your screen on a black background, you may need Windows Startup Repair.

    Hi,

I cut and paste the information into Terminal and restarted my computer, holding down the ALT (Options) Key. It worked !!  Bootcamp icon came up as an option on the screen. Windows started fine and my files were working fine. But I think I need to run the repair bit later on.

Yes - the Bootcamp volume shows up in Finder

Yes - The files are visible in Bootcamp volume

Yes -  Bootcamp can be selected as a StartUp Disk in System Preferences.

Thank you for all your help.

    HI.

If I set the StartUp disk as Windows, then find that Windows is not working I might get locked out my computer and not get into OSX?

No, you will not be locked out of OSX. You can always power-cycle and use the ALT key to get back to OSX. And Test 3 was successful. You should test the reverse from Windows Control Panel -> Boot Camp. You need to make sure Bootcamp drivers are  installed to be able to see Boot Camp in Control Panel.

    Hi,

I did all the above and it works fine.

One thing I forgot to say to you, earlier, was that I was trying to partition my hard drive before all this happened. But I quickly removed the partition before carrying out your suggestions.  I would still like to partition the hard drive and install an older version of OSX (Tiger), in that partition, so that I can boot up in Tiger and run my old Appleworks files.

Thanks for all your hard work
