Oct 20, 2014 1:56 PM in response to Carolyn Samitby FoxyFone,Thank you.
Did a clean install of Yosemite today and afterwards the Volume Control did not work anymore.
No System Preferences, anything did the job. Safe Mode saved the day.
Did not work while being in Safe Mode but finally after the restart: back to normal. great!

Jan 16, 2015 8:31 AM in response to macmeisterby samuel.chan,@macmesiter,
Not sure if you already solved the problem, but if you're still wondering why it didn't allow you to key in your password, one way to understand it is that the terminal console is -- for confidentiality and security reasons -- not showing your password as you type. You paste:
Step 1: maxpowrssimac3:~ masgpwwers$ sudo killall coreaudiod
Step 2: Password:
remark: you said "It won't let me type in my password. I key the password and no letters appear. I then opened a Word doc, typed my password, copied it but couldn't paste in." That's how it works. It's operating normally. You should continue to type your full password without expecting to see any letters on it. Hit enter when done.Sorry if this is a little late and you've already got this figured out but hope this tip helps.
