Q: how to import a filemaker database

Filemaker obliges users regularly to buy updates. I have a few rather simple FM-databases that I want to transfer to my AppleWorks database (N1-6.2.9). Is this possible and how to proceed? My AW version seems to be for Power PC, but my MacBook Pro is Intel, OS X 10.5.8.

You will need to export the database as a tab-delimited or ASCII text file to import it into AppleWorks. Note that you will lose any formatting, calculations, etc. You could also copy & paste.

AppleWorks 6 will run on an Intel Mac running OS X 10.6 or earlier. It will not run on Lion, 10.7, or later due to the lack of Rosetta that enables PPC apps to run.

Thanks for your reply. My question was poorely worded. What I meant to find out is if there is a possiblity to import in the AW database a FM database, layout and all included. Not merely the data contained in it.

    Walter.

I'm afraid there is no way to do that. I would most strongly advise you not to move to AppleWorks. It hasn't been sold or supported for some years now, and the next Mac you buy will not run it without having to do it using Snow Leopard Server under emulation.

What makes you think you have to keep updating Filemaker Pro? I transferred my AW databases to Filemaker Pro 10 running on Snow Leopard several uears ago, and now I'm running it on a new Mac with Mavericks and it works perfectly well. There are a few advanced facilities such as web serving which probably won't work but if all you need is local databases 10 will work fine.

Thanks for yr advise. In order for my MacBook Pro (Intel), now under OSX 10.5.8 to continue syncing with my iPad, now with iOS 8, I have to upgrade the MacBook to OSX 10.6 and later versions. From the FM`s site I concluded that my version FM Pro 8.5v2 would not be guaranteed to be compatible with OSX 10.6 and later.

Would you advise to upgrade to OSX 10.6 anyway?

    Thanks, Walter

I hadn't realised you were as far back as 8.5. If they say that's not compatible with Snow Leopard than it is likely not to be. You may have a problem here; FMP 10 will work on SL but I doubt it's now available (at least not from Filemaker - I don't know what chance there is of finding it from an independent retailer); the current version of FMP won't work on Snow Leopard.

One option might be to partition your hard disk and have two partitions, one as at present and one Snow Leopard, and boot into one or the other as required. It's a fuss to do, though.

In order to sync with IOS8 you will need 10.10 when it comes out (which your Mac may or may not be capable of running) or for partial compatibility using OSX 10.7, 8, or 9. 10.6 will not work with iCloud.
