Q: Gmail not automatically being downloaded in MAIL

In the past 24 hours I cannot get Apple MAIL to automatically download Gmail messages.  For the past 3 years or more this has worked and in the past 13 months at my office or home location-- never a problem.

But starting about 4 pm CDT yesterday, Monday 6 Oct 2014 --- I have to QUIT the MAIL application and restart it-- and then any Gmails (in either of my accounts) that are in the IN box of Gmail will be downloaded.

But even if I manually click GET MAIL -- the accumulated Gmails will NOT download.  It is not until I quit the MAIL program and restart that all the eMails are downloaded.  NOTE:  This does not happen with eMails sent to my iCloud address  (for example abc@icloud.com) - those work perfectly!!

AND my iPad and iPhone 5 both get the Gmails automatically --- it is just my Mac running 10.8.5 (which it has been running regularly!) which does not get the Gmails automatically.

And this just started about 24 hours ago-- I can't think of anything that I changed prior to this not working.

Very perplexed--- has something changed with Gmail?  If so-- then why does this work on my iPhone and iPad and not the Mac?  Something to do with Mountain Lion 10.8.5 suddenly too old?  Hard to imagine, my wife has a nearly 10 year old PowerBook G4 running MAIL with OS Leopard (10.5 I believe…)

Help!

Best regards,

MORE INFORMATION:  If I go to MAIL and then take GMAIL OFFLINE (or take all accounts offline) via the menubar "Mailbox, Online Status" - then after Gmail is fully offline (about 10 seconds or so) put Gmail back ON-line--- then any eMails from Gmail that have been sent already will suddenly automatically download.  BUT any messages sent AFTER turning Gmail back ON-line do not load -- the message has to be "in the queue" it seems.

Again, very strange, new behavior in the past 24 hours…  Can't live like this--need a solution.

It sounds like some have found the same problem over here: Lots of mail issues since last Mountain Lion update

Note the Apple rep blamed it on a "stuck email". Good grief! It's not "stuck" when you launch the app the first time; why would it get "stuck" after launch?

I have the same problem here!

I only get my e-mails from my gmail account if I restart mail.

Everything worked perfectly since this morning!

I got 2 other accounts IMAP (iCloud and an other one) and they work perfectly.

The strange thing is that I noticed that on the bottom of MAIL (in the left column) there is another folder (white and not blue) named gmail and there I receive the emails but to see them in the usual folder at the top left i need to restart Mail.

    What's going on?

    best regards

Can you describe that folder in more detail?  Where is it exactly?  All my folders in Mail (in the left column) are grey - not blue - there is a sorta white gmail folder at the bottom, but it just contains grey folders like the in-box for gmail - and that is not being updated for me…

    Thanks for any more information--

Sorry also my folders are all gray!

I think that the folder I am speaking about is the white one you refer to!

If I open that folder There I find a copy of the e-mails, if I restart mail then I find the mails in the usual folder

when I receive an Email to my gmail account it goes in the white folder in the sub-folder "Tutti i messaggi" (all messages).

If I restart MAIL than I get the same E-mail in the usual folder at the top of the left column.

this happens on this mac with 10.8.5 and also on my other mac with 10.7.5

here is a picture of that folder

    Hope it helps!

I am having the same annoying problem for last few days with both my gmail accounts.

My android phone receives gmail no problems but with my Mail app I have to quit and restart every time I want to check gmail.

Nothing has been changed with my settings and have done no recent updates.

We have the same problem.  We are running 6 different macs of different ages and operating systems and the same symptoms on all.  Gmail only appears after restarting Mail app.  Very annoying but it must be something Google has changed.  We haven't made any changes to any of the Macs.  Hopefully Google will sort soon.

In the meantime I'm quite enjoying being in control of when I receive my emails for a change although not practical in the long run.

Your information does indeed point to a problem origin at Google (GMail) not Apple---

Also note:  If you send an eMail from an iPhone with Gmail - it will NOT sync to your Mac--- at all! It does NOT appear in the SENT folder-- I've tried to get it to appear, but no success.  Any others finding this?  (It will appear on the sidebar bottom for Gmail - you can then copy it to the top sent folder if you follow me here-- if not let me know and I'll send full details).

I'm basically no longer using Gmail as of this minute-- until resolved because it is very good otherwise.

    Best regards,

Having the same problems. On my MacBook the past few days, I only receive Gmail if I relaunch Mail. But Gmail continues to work perfectly on my iPad and iPhone. I've checked settings/connections on my MacBook and they're fine.

Touching wood as I type but just had a few emails come through without having to restart so maybe ok again.

Yeah, not here either. Still only getting iCloud email automatically. I see 2 gmail messages on my iPad that haven't downloaded to my Mac.
