Q: Lots of mail issues since last Mountain Lion update

Since the last update to Mountain Lion, just a couple of days ago, my mail has gone completely haywire, and I can't figure out why.

First of all, my Mail App on my mid-2010 27" iMac won't get mail anymore.  I have to close mail and reopen it every single time to see if I have email, which is quite convenient when you're waiting on replies to something.  If I have my iPhone nearby, mail will show up there -- but not on the desktop.

Secondly, my iPhone WAS NOT upgraded to IOS8 (nor will it be!) -- the software was downloaded (against my wishes) and it is just sitting there with a comment that there's not enough memory to install it.     So no upgrade on the iPhone -- yet, when I send a photo from my phone to my gmail account, it automatically sends it to my iCloud address -- which is NOT what I want, and it doesn't show up in my Mail App on the iMac!   I made no other updates to my phone -- just an upgrade to Mountain Lion on the iMac.   Previously, I could take an iPhone photo, mail it to myself, and it would come to my desktop where I could save it there.  Now it won't do that.  And I didn't make any changes to it.   No matter how much I try and change things to get rid of the stupid cloud address, it will not send to my gmail account anymore, and thereby won't end up on my desktop iMac.

This is making things very unusable!    Has anyone else had issues, and does anyone have any work-arounds?

Google is now aware of it, responding to comments, and states they are working on a fix.  https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!categories/gmail/computer-email-program -please-specify-apple-mail-outlook-thunderbird-etc

Outstanding! Now we're getting somewhere. And with all indications showing this is probably a Google-caused issue, its good to see they are aware of this in their support department.

Thanks for painting to that, Karen!

This is the response I got from Google 2 minutes ago,

As we discussed, I've been advised that this issue has already been reported to us. It has been investigated at our end and it turned out we're currently experiencing huge IMAP delay with Apple Mail. This is not happening with any other mail client and since you advised no changes have been made at your end recently, the root cause of the issue is at the Apple's side. I recommended you to contact Apple support and report the issue so they can hopefully help you resolve it. I will keep your case open for now. Please reply to this message once you have any update on the issue. I'm looking forward to your reply.

What what what?  Apple's side causing this???  Seems no one wants to accept responsibility here - or perhaps they don't know…

Is the conclusion that "Google didn't make any changes and Apple didn't either?" - but suddenly a massive IMAP delay problem…  I'm lost…

That doesn't even make sense! If no change has been made at your end, i.e. no changes in Apple software, then how has it become an issue at the Apple side? Apple is not the one who mucked with the APIs on the 6th of October; Google did!

    Excellent news. Thanks.

In the meantime I have created a workaround to avoid having to keep restarting Mail:

    • Log into Gmail via their web site.
    • In the search box at the top of the page, type "label:unread deliveredto:<username>@gmail.com" (without the quote marks and substituting your own Gmail username in the email address). Then click the little down-arrow at the right end of the search box.
    • Click "Create filter with the search" at the bottom right.
    • Confirm that you want to create a filter and on the next window select "Skip the Inbox (Archive it)" and "Apply the label". On the label drop-down select "New Label" and create a name for a temporary Inbox (I used ~Inbox_Temp).
    • Then click "Create Filter.
    • Now all new incoming emails to your account should be redirected to this temporary Inbox folder/label.
    • Go back to Apple Mail and go to Preferences -> General and select Check For New Messages every 5 minutes (or whatever interval you prefer).
    • Restart Mail to make the new folder appear in your account.

Now all new email arrives in this temporary Inbox and Apple Mail sees it when it refreshes the folder every 5 minutes. I'm not sure why new unread messages appear OK in folders but not in the Inbox, but that's how it is for me.

There is NO DELAY in IMAP. Messages appear straightaway in Junk and in user-created folders/labels. It is ONLY the Inbox that doesn't sync properly. Google need to look at the problem properly instead of just pointing the finger at Apple.

Yes-- and on the Mac the "Gmail" section on the left has a folder called "All Mail" and that does receive the eMails --- but of course no notification when they come in---   but at least they are indeed visible on your Mac-- as are the sent ones --

SO --- it's the main Apple Mail IN Box that does not get the eMails without your workaround setup.

There must be a cure for this…

OOOOPS - it seems I spoke toooo fast.  The messages don't go to that folder on my Mac (MAIL left-hand column) like I just wrote--- they don't get downloaded unless I take Gmail offline then go on-line.  In fact, not even getting that to work now…  WhataMess…

Sorry about the previous misleading post…

Aha... I don't have All Mail visible on IMAP (otherwise you get 2 copies of every email downloaded on pre-Mavericks Mail).

OOOOPS - it seems I spoke toooo fast.

Me too! My workaround only seems to work intermittently. It was working when I sent a test email but since then it only updates at lengthy intervals. Back to the drawing board...

Aha... I don't have All Mail visible on IMAP (otherwise you get 2 copies of every email downloaded on pre-Mavericks Mail).

That brings up a question:  How do I NOT show Gmail's "ALL MAIL" on my Mac if I don't want it to appear?  (Just click it and delete it??)

This is certainly giving me a bit of an education on how eMail works! (or doesn't work…)

BTW - (my daughter says that means "by the way" - I thought it was a type of bicycle…) -- anyway--- I do not delete many eMails (well some of course) and have (on my Mac) every single eMail I ever received or sent since 5 March 1996.  All now in MAIL readable format too! Comes in handy-- can search or do a smart mailbox to find out what I did the past 18 years in case I forget!  (And yeah, I do SuperDuper! backups regularly…)

    Stephen,

    To hide 'All Mail':

    Go to Gmail web interface

Click the gear on the right, choose Settings

    Go to Labels tab

For 'All Mail' uncheck "Show in IMAP"

I have the same mail problem with my Mac and gmail. I note, however, that I have not installed any of the recent software updates.

That would seem to suggest the problem is coming from Google.

I note I have no problem getting mail on my iPhone

I have just now begun to get some emails trickling in via the Apple Mail app.   Not all of them  -- I just got two of them in a row, but see I have one in Google that didn't make it to the Mail app.    Perhaps a fix is being worked on?  I also notice that in the gmail mail site on the web, I have a new folder that I didn't add called "Imap/Drafts".   I still have a regular "Drafts" folder, but now I have this new one.    Something is changing for sure, which is a good thing.

    Hello all!

So glad to find this thread - thanks all for the great info! What would we do without forums populated by real users (sigh)?  Can't remember the last time a tech person actually helped me solve a problem, but consumer forums like these? ALL THE TIME. So thanks, all.

Anyway, I too am having the same issues.  Mac Mail INBOX (Mac OS 10.8.5, Mail 6.6) not receiving mail, but it does show up in "All Mail" IMAP folders. Must restart Mac Mail for new ones to show up. Iphone 5 (that has not been updated yet to IOS 8) can receive mail just fine (through Mac Mail app).  Recently deleted iPhone Gmail app, so can't compare there.

One Interesting note -- I also have (2) other email accounts, which I access the exact same way (IMAP via Mac Mail). They are showing up fine for me, and for 10 other employees here. So just the one personal email acct acting funny. Maybe the changes at Google (causing problems) haven't been applied yet to those business accounts?  The only other difference I can think of is that we use a company domain as our gmail address (ex. sarah @ ourcompany.com instead of sarah @ gmail).  Don't think that would make any difference (?) but adding the info here, since it is a variable.

    Best,

    Sara
