    Upgrading to Snow Leopard

You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.

After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.

         Snow Leopard General Requirements

           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor

           2. 1GB of memory

           3. 5GB of available disk space

           4. DVD drive for installation

           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;

               fees may apply.

           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and

               terms apply.

When you have upgraded and can access the App Store you should be able to re-download Mountain Lion via the Purchases page in App Store. You should be aware that since your model can run Mavericks, the App Store may refuse to allow you to re-download Mountain Lion. In that case you should install Mavericks instead. The download is free.

    Upgrading to Mavericks

You can upgrade to Mavericks from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mavericks can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.

    Upgrading to Mavericks

To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Mavericks from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mavericks is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

        OS X Mavericks- System Requirements

Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks

             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later

             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later

             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later

             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later

             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later

             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later

             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later

To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.

         Are my applications compatible?

See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.

Well, you can't download to the DVD, so you need to be sure you download to your computer's disk. If you don't have enough space there, then you need to take care of that first:

Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive

      1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.

      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.

      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.

      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.

      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.

      6. See The Storage Display.

You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.

You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.

Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

At least 20 GBs is required as free space for OS X. About 12 GBs is needed to download and install Mavericks.

What did you update, and to what? I don't quite know where you are in the outlined process. Have you installed Snow Leopard? Have you updated it to 10.6.8? Did you sign into the App Store, locate Install Mac OS X Mavericks, download it then run the installation?
