Q: Why can't I use my iCloud email address as my Apple ID

When I want to enter my iCloud email address (like foo@icloud.com) as my Apple ID, the system at appleid.apple.com tells me that I can't use an email address with a domain owned by Apple as my Apple ID which I find odd enough. I tried to create a new Apple ID through appleid.apple.com just to see what happens and even then it says that you cannot use an email address with an Apple domain.

It becomes even more odd when you consider that, if I'm not wrong, you can very well create a new Apple ID and use a new @icloud.com email address if you do it with an iPhone.

I can use my iCloud address as the primary email address of my Apple ID account so it's not a huge problem, but it still annoys me a little bit that the name of my Apple ID has to continue being my obsolete Gmail address.

Does anyone have more information on this?

That address is also your recovery address, in case of the iCloud address failing instructions will be sent to the alternate, not much use if it is the same address really.

'Primary' is a figment of your imagination, whichever address you choose to use is the 'Primary' (unless receiving emails from Apple is your 'Primary' use)

But, as you clearly feel different, tell Apple: Apple Feedback

Sorry, but you are still not understanding the issue. I suggest you read through this thread from the beginning.  The 'Primary' is NOT my figment of my imagination. What I mean by primary (which is also Apple's term) is the email address Apple uses to send you correspondence on Apple purchases or any other correspondence from Apple.  Also, Apple lets you setup a alternate email address for recovery issues.  But Apple will not let you setup an iCloud email address as a primary email address for correspondence with Apple. It has to be a 3rd party email address. Just plan silly!!!

Why tell me?, I cannot change what you perceive. I already gave you the link to tell Apple, they can do something, I can't.

Of course you can't do anything about it.  This is an Apple issue.  I already gave feedback to Apple, as has numerous others.  It's falling on deaf ears.  Maybe bringing notice of this issue on this forum will cause alert other ears at Apple, or cause others to provide feedback to Apple, and finally get this issue fixed.  That's one of the reasons of these forums.

So basically, you come into this thread to tell people they're wrong.  When it's pointed out that they aren't wrong and you are your response is to ask them why they're telling you that.  Well just maybe it's because you incorrectly told them they're wrong.

I'm not even sure why you're in this thread.  Beginning to suspect you're a troll.

Like I said, your perception will guide your actions but FYI, this is a user manned tech support forum, Apple don't read it and have kindly provided a mechanism for informing them directly.

I don't see a problem at all so this issue may not be as clearcut as you see it. But it's a free world, we can differ.

    Good luck.

Sorry YOU don't see a problem with this issue.  But when I make a purchase at Apple, and they send me an email confirming my purchase, they should be using my current email address...which is an iCloud email address.  Instead Apple sends a purchase confirmation to my old gmail address. You cannot change that correspondence address to a icloud address.  Just plan silly!!!

And of course Apple does not officially provide support on these forums.  But you are naive if you think people at Apple do not monitor these forums. Plus this will hopefully bring attention to this issue, so more of their customers will provide feedback to Apple.

What are you sorry about, I disagree with you, is that your issue?

they should be using my current email address...which is an iCloud email address.

Tell Apple what you think they should do, I am not interested but they may be.

    Good luck.

You say you're not interested, yet somehow you're still here posting in this thread for no apparent reason.

I already told Apple what they should do.  If you are not interested in this issue, why do you keep responding...stating it's not issue for you.  For many others....as shown in this thread and many other threads...it is an issue.

Yeah - I didn't know if getting Apple-specific correspondence worked differently if your Apple/Primary email address is a Gmail. Mine is an @me.com, and I get all of my mail to my mailbox. But the OP indicated that they do not get the Apple correspondence to their iCloud address, so wasn't sure if that would be something that could be remedied by having a way to (on Manage your Apple ID) indicate that you wanted all Apple correspondence sent to your Alternate address rather than your primary one....

As I said, I don't have this issue. I see everything on my Mail whether I'm looking at it from an iOS device, my Mac, or via iCloud.com. But didn't know if that was because it was an Apple email address or not....

    Cheers,

    GB

P.S. - Your Mona Lisa with iPhone is showing up now for me! Much better than the head silhouette!

Unfortunately there is not an option on https://appleid.apple.com/ to manage and indicate the email address for Apple specific correspondence.  It is set to the email address used for your Apple ID.  And as discussed, the Apple ID cannot be set to an icloud address (even the one that is set for your account).
