Q: can't seem to reboot using bootcamp

Hi,

Usually i hold down the ALT (Options) key when restarting my computer and two options come up. One is to boot up the computer using OSX software and the other option is to boot up the computer, in Windows. Now I am just getting two disc icons. One that says, Macintosh HD and the other one says, Recovery.

How do I get access to my Windows files?

Any positive help much appreciated.

Hi,

I cut and paste the information into Terminal and restarted my computer, holding down the ALT (Options) Key. It worked !! Bootcamp icon came up as an option on the screen. Windows started fine and my files were working fine. But I think I need to run the repair bit later on.

Yes - the Bootcamp volume shows up in Finder

Yes - The files are visible in Bootcamp volume

Yes - Bootcamp can be selected as a StartUp Disk in System Preferences.

You can install another copy of OSX as long as the hardware supports it, but it will break Bootcamp again. Creating a new MBR can work around it, but it is a very fragile setup and can break with software updates. Post back here when you want to install Tiger. One option you may want to consider is installing Tiger in VM so the current partitions can stay intact.

I have checked VMware (http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php?action=search&deviceCat egory=software&advancedORbasic=advanced&maxDisplayRows=50&key=&productId=4&gos_v mw_product_release%5B%5D=90&datePosted=-1&partnerId%5B%5D=-1&os_bits=-1&os_use%5 B%5D=-1&os_family%5B%5D=-1&os_type%5B%5D=-1&rorre=0) which does not support 10.4.x.

VirtualBox does not support (https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Guest_OSes) 10.4.x.

Parallels does support 10.4.11 (http://kb.parallels.com/en/114381), but in older versions of Parallels (v4 and v5).

Your choices are limited.

Based on Mac OS X versions (builds) for computers you will need a 2006/2007 iMac for Tiger. Your current iMac can support Snow Leopard (10.6) or higher.

Hi,

Snow Leopard seems the option. Do you know the procedure for partitioning the hard disk, successfully, so that I can reboot my computer in Snow Leopard?

Since there is OS X and Windows already on the Mac, if you add a partition, Windows will stop booting properly.

1. Take a full backup of OS X, and Windows. I use a 1TB drive split in half and formatted as HFS+ and NTFS, to backup OS X and Windows respectively.
2. Once you have the backups, create a new HFS+ partition for SL with the desired size.
3. Install SL.
4. 'Fix' Windows after the SL install. Step 3 and 4 can be interchanged, but I prefer fixing Windows later.
5. Test OSX, SL and Windows.
6. Install Appleworks.

Your SL should be on a DVD. Insert into the Optical drive, when the Installer comes up, select the partition you created with Disk Utility for SL as the destination.

You can post a screen shot or the output of diskutil list, if you need additional information.
