Situations with sound, I know, can be very frustrating. It sounds as though the Ring/Silent switch may have been toggled to silent. Please use the following article as a reference and let me know if this is not the situation that is affecting your device.
iOS: Understanding sounds, ringtones, and alerts
Set your device to silent mode
- iPhone: Toggle the Ring/Silent switch on the side of the device.

Im having the same problem. for example, my waze app will not talk anymore while im connected to bluetooth unless im on a call with waze on in background. Same with all other sounds from phone. Thanks, james
