Q: My iPad Pages, Numbers, and Keynote apps Stopped Syncing with iCloud Drive

My iPad Air (iOS 8.0.2) is synced with my iCloud Drive, and all of its apps (Notes, Contacts, Calendar, etc.) sync perfectly with iCloud Drive... except for Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.

When I open Pages, Numbers, or Keynote on my iPhone 6 (iOS 8.0.2), my Mac (Yosemite beta), or my iCloud.com page, all files are there and all apps sync perfectly with one another. It's just Pages, Numbers, and Keynote on my iPad that refuses to sync. When I open my iPhone Pages app, I even see the text "Updating" at the top of the screen. But not on my iPad version.

I even factory restored my iPad and started all over again. And for a moment, the Pages app got something. A few docs and one folder appeared. But then it stopped again. And I haven't been able to repeat the process.

Anyone have any suggestions?

    Hello lippyloggy,

After reviewing your post, I have located an article that can help in this situation. It contains a number of troubleshooting steps and helpful advice concerning iCloud Drive:

    Using iWork with iCloud Drive

    Options for iWork customers

    1. Upgrade to iCloud Drive later this year when OS X Yosemite is available.

Choose this option if you’d like your documents to keep up to date with your apps on OS X Mavericks or earlier. Note that until you upgrade your iCloud account to iCloud Drive, you won’t be able to use the iWork web apps on iCloud.com or the Share via iCloud feature.

If you don’t upgrade to iCloud Drive at this time:

    • Your documents will keep up to date across devices with iOS 8 and across devices with iOS 7 and Macs with OS X Mavericks or earlier.
    • You won’t be able to use the iWork web apps on iCloud.com.
    • You won’t be able to use the Share via iCloud feature.
    • Documents you previously shared via iCloud won’t be accessible to collaborators until you upgrade to iCloud Drive.

    2. Upgrade to iCloud Drive today.

Choose this option if you’d like to use the iWork web apps on iCloud.com and the Share via iCloud feature. To access the most recent versions of your documents from a Mac with OS X Mavericks or earlier, you’ll need to go to iCloud.com and access Pages, Numbers, and Keynote from there. On a PC, you can install iCloud for Windows 4.0and set up iCloud Drive. If you upgrade to iCloud Drive now:

    • Your documents will keep up to date across devices with iOS 8, Macs with OS X Yosemite, PCs with iCloud for Windows 4.0, and iCloud.com. (OS X Yosemite will be available this fall.)
    • Your documents will no longer keep up to date on devices with iOS 7 and Macs with OS X Mavericks or earlier.
    • You’ll be able to use the iWork web apps on iCloud.com.
    • You’ll be able to use the Share via iCloud feature on iOS 8 and iCloud.com. You’ll be able to use it on OS X Yosemite later this year.
    • Documents you previously shared via iCloud will be accessible to collaborators.

I've also found that iCloud Drive is very unreliable so far. I currently have my iPhone and Mac in sync, but nothing at all is syncing to my iPad. Several times, I've had to disable iCloud Drive and re-enable it (very time-consuming, because it takes hours for the files to re-download to the iPad). It's a bit of a mess, which (so far) reminds me a lot of when Apple has introduced new services in the past (MobileMe, the first iCloud effort, etc.). Which is to say, it will probably be mostly fine in a few months, but until then we'll just have to put up with the fact that it's going to have teething problems (or switch to using different apps and another Cloud platform like Dropbox). These are the perils of being an 'early adopter', I think.

I am having the same problem - I use Pages extensively (I am an author) and like to tweak manuscripts on either my MacBook Air running Yosemite now or my iPhone running 8.02 - but nothing is syncing - old files pre iCloud Drive appear on both, but any changes or new files remain isolated on each device.  iCloud.com never did work for Pages which continues to show as beta there.  I guess I will have to continue to use Box.com and a memory stick as my two backups.   I had the same problem with my old iPad - I stopped using it entirely as nothing synced with it - but that was a result of the MobileMe snafu - I have learned to live with two accounts and am careful to do everything in one account on my iPhone and MacBook Air.

It would be lovely if Apple could figure this out!  Unfortunate that they claim it works now when clearly it does not.

Except for one minor problem - docs in Pages are not updated across devices using iCloud Drive as advertised in the item you posted.  I created two test docs in Pages three days ago: one on my iPhone 5 running 8.02 and one on my MacBook Air running Yosemite - neither synced across devices.  Today I had to email myself a major doc I created on my iPhone, download it to my MacBook, then upload it to iCloud Drive in order to sync it.  I was lucky enough to get in on the 50gb free storage on Box two years ago and I will have to use that as my cross device sharing tool until Apple fixes this.

    Hey, guys!

As of Sunday, October 19th, 2014, all sync issues between my Mac, iPad, and iPhone have been resolved. I had already downloaded the free upgrade to Yosemite from the App Store, as well as updated my pages, keynote, numbers apps on my idevices. But it wasn't until last night's app updates that everything finally synced fast and completely. Just make sure your idevices are running iOS 8.0.2 or higher, and your Mac is running OS 10.10 or higher, and all apps are up to date.

    Thanks, Apple!

What app updates?  I upgraded to Yosemite the day it became available, and the next day i updated the iWork apps  - Pages 5.5 for example.  And nothing is syncing - or rather on my phone it says it is 'updating' various docs, but it has been saying that for several hours.  I need faster syncing than hours or days.. I could live with a few minutes, but would expect instant syncing.  Back to Box.com for me - manual syncing takes less than a minute which is considerably faster than hours

New updates for Pages, numbers, iPhoto, keynote, and iMovie for Yosemite OS 10.10 were released just last night. After this last update, pages on my iPhone finally synced. I also recommend going to your iPhone or iPad Settings --> iCloud --> iCloud Drive, and turn off sync for the specific app (E.g. Pages). It will warn that this will delete all files on your iPhone or iPad (whatever's on your iCloud is safe). Once it says it's done, 30 seconds or so, turn it back on and check the app. It should be syncing to iCloud.

Hmm.. well these updates haven't reached Canada yet - I just checked the App store update tab and it says i have no pending updates - the last were done October 17.  Maybe tomorrow as it is not working at all. I tried deleting Pages from my iPhone and downloading again from the cloud - same thing exactly.  I even created a file on my MacBook air - and had to upload it manually to Drive!  It won't even sync with only one device online! Well, I guess they are rolling out the fixes one country at a time.

Ok, I found an update for Pages on my iPhone - but nothing for Yosemite on my MacBook Air ... I turned off Drive on the phone and reinstalled it, now Pages has no docs but I expect they will load soon - I hope

Next step!  I turned off Drive and on again - redownloaded Pages on my iPhone - now there are not docs at all on my phone!  All are still on my Air, thank God!  Good thing I have them backed up in Box and on a memory stick!

Ok, still no files appearing on my iPhone - I reset everything an  hour ago.  So, now I am ensuring that I have all my important files backed up on a memory stick and on Box.com - so far Drive still has my files showing on my MacBook Air, but who knows for how long?

I have been using Macs since about 1999 - not as long as others - but still a fair time.  I switched to Macs because I am a writer who just wants his computer to work as advertised. I do not care to spend endless hours trying to make some new software work as promised.  I had enough of that when I used Windows.  Well, it seems that Apple has now regressed to the level of Microsoft.  I will continue to use Apple products because I am not rich enough to buy all new and because they are still way ahead in terms of multi media writing with iBook Author. But I have to say, in my roughly 15 years of using Macs, this is the biggest screw up ever for that company. What a supremely annoying failure on the part of Apple!

Well, actually Apple has a long upheld tradition of failing when releasing internet services. iCloud Drive perfectly fits the picture alongside MobileMe, iCloud Docs and Data, and so on… Resetting the iPhone is probably a waste of time and nerves – there is nothing you can do when there is amateur hour at Apple's Cloud Services teams… My iPhone had problems to get Data from iCloud Drive, and after a restart it got about half of the files that should be in iCloud Drive. Funny enough, these were all files that wouldn't be shown on my iCloud's account website. In the Finder (Yosemite) there is not one folder or file shown under iCloud Drive. Other than that, the Mac seems to be able to at least upload data to iCloud, because the sync with my iPad worked fine yesterday – in the meantime it doesn't work anymore. Anyway, my advice would be just to wait. If you really need to work with your devices, I would recommend third-party-apps that sync using Dropbox (there are a few options that work on iOS as well as on Mac, I think Notability is one of these, but I am not sure…). With third-party-apps there is also support by e-mail in case something breaks…

indeed!  After updating my phone to 8.1 about 12 of my several hundred pages files appeared greyed out on my phone. All show including folders on my Air (Yosemite).

I wonder why syncing works perfectly with Reminders and Notes - it is instant across devices, but rarely with iCloud or Drive?

I chatted online with a very nice fellow at Apple today. We tried all sorts of things but the upshot is that only a handful of files appear on my phone and they are almost all only partially downloaded.  I noticed that they are all files created since the switch to Yosemite and 8.1. So I will investigate Dropbox again as Box.com won't allow me to upload the newest version of Pages.

I wonder if Apple will ever fix this?  It seems to be a specifically Pages problem as I do have a few files in Numbers and Keynote and they were ok
