Q: Your System has Run out of Application memory

I upgraded to Mavericks from Mountain Lion, and I have been getting the error message "Your System has Run out of Application memory", and I am forced to restart the computer to be able to keep working.

I have been monitoring the Activity Monitor and I have not found a process that is increasing the amount of memory used. I have seen a proliferation of processes.

I have an iMac 27-inch, Late 2012 with a 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7 and 24 GB 1600 MHz DDR3.

As of this morning, after applying yesterday's update for Mavericks, I'm constantly getting the error message:

Your System has Run out of Application memory

How should I proceed to solve this?

Before this morning my MacBook Pro (13", late-2013) was very stable.

    Thanks for any help!

    Hans

I had this problem and where I was getting the error your system has run out of application memory and fixed it by resetting the NVRAM /PRAM.

    TURN OFF COMPUTER

    Turn on computer and

HIT COMMAND / OPTION / P / R  ALL FOUR KEYS at the same time before the gray screen appears

Hold the keys until you hear it start up for a second time.

I had to do it twice, one right after the other, and now my machine is fine.

    Hope this helps

I am having the same issue.  This is a joke.  I have been having endless problems with my Mac, my mail program and my iphone.  Apple died with Jobs and now the company is in the very beginning of their swam dive.  I'm not a tech nerd and I don't know the in's and out's of my computer, so I can't answer RAM details or what's going on in the background.  I just need it to work like it used to.  Any help would greatly (GREATLY) appreciated.  Maybe it's time to hang up the Apple once and for all.

That is the type of comment made here commonly to try to troll a reaction from other Apple users. It doesn't do anything except make people ignore your post.

I have been with Apple since I was born.  I've never used these forums and I've NEVER owned another type of machine.  BUT WHEN IT DOESN'T WORK IT'S PRETTY USELESS.  I have restarted my computer over a dozen times this morning with this issue.  With over 100k views I'd say this is probably a serious issue, so ignore my post or not I think it probably needs to be fixed.

It's pretty hard to say why it 'just doesn't work' when you have supplied no details of your problem. To say you are having the same problem as someone here posted about over a year ago is no help to you or anyone else. I suggest starting your own thread and including an etrecheck report may help you more, and I'd probably stay away from the cheap shots at Steve Jobs when you do it.

etresoft  a long time contributer to Apple Support Communities wrote a very useful app he called etrecheck which helps in diagnosing many problems caused by third party installs etc.. Go to his website, read his information and from there download and run the program according to his instructions

    Visit his site here

    Cheers

True your Mac needs to be fixed. So when are you going to stop whining and moaning here and get started on fixing it?

I had the same problem with my previous iMac - ended up having to put in more ram chips, which did fix the problem, but at a cost.

My new iMac which has 8GB of ram on board is now suffering from the same problem and in spite of having been through a series of 'fixes' with Apple support, including reinstalling the OS X operating system, the problem persists.

While speaking to the help desk at my ISP about an unrelated issue, I asked if they'd had any similar queries and he pointed out that there were 116,000+ posts just here on the Apple support site and that while we were on the phone, several hundred more posts appeared, so it's not as if this is an unusual problem.

Isn't it time Apple actually did something about this? If this was a car I'd just bought, I'd ask for my money back. Because it's a computer glitch, does Apple just assume that we'll just put up with it?

    I have a similar issue.

My Macbook Air runs out of memory all the time.

When it boots up I have about 25Gb available but if I leave it on for a while it quickly goes down and eventually completely runs out of memory in a few hours.

I have no idea what process is doing this and I tried force quitting everything that was open at the time but it still runs out of memory quickly.

If it was a windows PC I would think virus but this is a mac and I have Symantec installed and updated daily.

    Thanks for your Reply CT.

Does that not put my Mac into danger?

I was advised to install Symantec when I bought it
