Have your friend's brother contact the US wireless provider to which the iPhone is locked

to see if they offer unlocking and if you qualify. Only the wireless provider to which

the iPhone is locked can unlock it. Most require the iPhone owner to be a customer in

good standing for a length of time to get an unlock.

First of all thanks for your reply and sorry for the delay. Today I told him that in order to unlock the phone, he must contact his brother to ask if the phone can be unlocked (since i read that no carrier in Greece supports unlocking). But I'm curious to know if I can unlock it online and avoid contacting his brother. Of course by paying in some legit website, not with hacks/tricks or anything like that and we both dont want to risk our hard working money on some fake thieves out there.

There is no way to legitimately unlock an iPhone other than by having the wireless

provider to which it is locked do the unlock. Those online sites will hack your iPhone

and most likely render it inoperative on the next update or just scam you out of your

credit information or both. Even if a Greek carrier supported unlocking, that Greek

carrier could only unlock iPhones locked to it and could do nothing with the iPhone you

    have from the US.

So what you're saying is that the only solution is to contact his brother, right? I guess he must pay something for the unlock, too...

    Thanks for your fast reply!

Oh, and one more thing about those online sites. I entered the IMEI number on a couple of those to do a "status check" or something like that...

Will I have problems later or anything like that? I didnt use any credit card info though...

If his brother is a customer in good standing of the wireless provider to which the

iPhone is locked, there probably will be no charge. If brother is not customer in

good standing, it is unlikely the iPhone will be unlocked.

As long as you gave no information other than IMEI to those sites, there should be no

    problem.
