Q: Airport Express n Won't Extend Wireless Network

It's the n version with the built in (flip-out plug) power, not the latest one, but it has the latest firmware.  It works fine as it's own wireless network plugged in with an ethernet cable to the Internet.  But now I'm at a guest house, trying to extend a weak wireless signal.  First, I wasn't able to set it up with the iPad to extend a wireless network (not an available option).  Luckily I have my MBA and an Ethernet cable (I came prepared!). When I Ethernet into the AE, and set it up as an extension of their wireless, it connects to the Internet through their wireless network, but then doesn't show up as its own wireless network, and has the flashing amber light.  Am I missing something?

Glad to be able to help.  I made the post to explain how I managed to overcome my initial problem (not being able to wirelessly extend a wireless network due to the originating router not being Apple hardware).  Sure, it's off-topic in the strictest sense, but it's useful to share information about what does and doesn't work.  Gives people option to decide if they want to pursue that other solution.

If they do, great; if they don't, no harm inflicted.

Well, I was very useful to me, and I suspect I'm not alone.

Plus, the thread isn't exclusively about succeeding in extending a network with a wire.  There are also posts that explain how to achieve the extension wirelessly.  I think perhaps your assessment is a little rash.  I hope you can re-read and take the valuable points from it.

I am glad , that I read your posts and the following discussion before  buying the Airport Express Base myself. Thank you very much, as I have D-Link router and would have the same problems and frustration.

Hi Bob, additional clarification on this: I have the old brick-style Airport Express N model, which I'm currently using to extend the newer Airport Express hockey puck. The hockey puck is setup to with DHCP and creating the network. The brick is in setup with extending using DHCP and in Bridge Mode. When I plugin the Ethernet cable from the Ethernet port of the hockey puck to the brick, I lose any internet connectivity. Seems there are conflicts that arise and this is why you are saying you can only do it over air? I seem to recall reading some documentation that said the brick would support ethernet. Thanks for your help!
