Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

Your words are like MAGIC! Hope it gets through to Tim. I hope Google takes over the world, they seem to be one of the few companies that cares about humanity.

So you like dealing with a company that gets money by selling your private information (which it gets from your emails and contacts etc) to anyone with enough money to buy it?

Google seems like one of the most intrusively insecure companies around. But if you don't mind that then you're fine.

But you should warn other posters that the price of using Google is your privacy, you will be a revenue stream to Google, nothing else.

How about we focus on the issue at hand here, instead of making ridiculous claims with no actual evidence.

This thread should keep it's discussion solely on it's purpose. which is the 2011 MBP crappy mobo+gpu failing for a lot of people.

Lets keep our personal believes and opinions to ourselves.

Currently I am awaiting my repair, dropped it off last Tuesday (Oct 7th), I am hoping this repair does manage to hold, will report here the results of course.

I think the one thing to remember, is that most of the people coming in this site and posting on this thread are like myself, people with a crippled computer, that was purchased at a premium price.

Having people naysaying and trying to tell us there is no problem is not productive at all, it is nice that your computer has not failed (yet) we do not want to hear that, we want to hear how to make our computers functional again.

The one thing that does scare me is that the repairs for the most part are not holding based on reports in this thread.

I did ask if milling the case (by a professional) might be a solution, and was told the machines are engeneered to move air in a specific manner, but if the machine was improperly designed in the first place the computers would not be failing with a certain regularity , Would not this if properly done be a possible solution? It seems that replacing the board over and over is not a solution, and not everyone has had the good fortune to come across techs who simply say, this machine has already had too many boards..here take a new replacement model .

Not all machines have failed, but I suspect many users have moved to new machines by now, it is the ones who have saved just to make a purchase of these high performance high end machines that seem to be hurting, they are hoping to get their moneys worth out of their machines. So I put it forward that there will be many computers owned by ones who have money to burn, they buy a new one every time a new model comes out, some use the computers only once or twice a week, and some may have multiple computers which spreads out the load so to speak (i think of one of the naysayers to this problem who does post here a lot, he has had no issue and has noted he has at least 3 laptops, it is true, he may never have a problem like this). The ones who use them more often and harder seem to be having them fail at a fairly regular pattern (2 to 3 years).

Add me to the list.  2011 MBP 15".  Was watching netflix last night when the screen went grey.  I've been trouble shooting all morning and no luck... Then stumbled upon this thread.  Don't have the $$$ to get CPU replaced.  This is a premium mac and it failing like this is unacceptable.  Has apple addressed this yet?  My livelihood depends on this machine doing what it's supposed to!

I have had my macbook 2.5 years it is wrecked same issue as every one has had above

It has already had a new logic board and screen ( maybe two of each under warranty)

It is now out of warranty and the problem  has been re-occuring for 6 months

I do not believe its due to usage as I haven't used my mac that much or worked it that hard

I went back to the apple shop and essentially told me it was my problem - pay £360 or shut up

using the 90 day warranty on the repair as one excuse / then that I bought my mac in the USA as another.

After pursuing all options I rang apple customer care asked for a senior adviser
    The senior adviser played dumb

and after much delay and ignorance I got through too the senior technicians manager whom after explaining the situation eventually agreed to have an engineer look in to my laptop.

I'll let people know if anything comes of it... Apple just need to take responsibility and find a solution

-Logic board replacement is a short fix - expensive and won't last

(don't let apple fob you off with this -demand a replacement machine)

There is the below  but I havent tried it as I think apple should take responsibility

Yes, please let us know how it turns out.  I'll give them a call in the morning to see what they say. II'm still somewhat in disbelief.  If it's truly 'dead', I have lost some very important files I hav been working on.

My 2011 MBP just died. I get a blue screen with black lines no matter how I try to boot.

I Upgraded my ram, and put OWC SSD's in it with the data doubler package.

I tried putting my original drive in, and It boot fine. I am reinstalling OS X on the SSD and I'm

going to try again : /

This is starting to get frustrating.  I think I will get in touch with OWC and see if there are

    any issues with their drives.

I've been trying to work out what to do since this happened to me a few weeks ago. My genius bar appointment was fruitless as I was unwilling to pay the £435 for a shoddy replacement logic board for it to become a ticking time bomb again. I haven't heard a dickybird since writing to Currys (where I bought it) quoting the Sale of Goods act etc. I don't really want to pay for a 'unofficial' repair at this point in the event that Apple actually do the decent thing and offer a replacement program. I've been stuck between a rock and a hard place and all this time my 'investment' or so I thought is left gathering dust like a useless paperweight. Although this is my own personal machine - I used it for both business and pleasure and worked it hard.

Thankfully today I had a minor breakthrough in the fact that my work have agreed to get me a new MacBook Pro through work (as I was using my own machine for work in any case, which I'm sure contributed to its early demise) So at least in the short term I have a machine to work with until I can get a permanent solution.

Buying a PC is not an option for me as I detest Windows with a vengeance - I've had to put up with it for years at work and using it everyday has not swayed my opinion one bit. I vastly prefer the MacOS even given the fact of these failing hardware designs. I think that if I do end up having to buy another MacBook Pro, I'll ensure I take out Apple Care and sell my machine after 3 years when it expires. It's not what I expect from Apple but their ethos has changed. They're more interested in pleasing their shareholders than their customers.

I have just tried the "magic" blanket solution where you leave the MacBook running, turned upside down, wrapped in a blanket in order to intentionally overheat it and do some well... magic with the soldering and stuff... and it worked. I left it in the blanket for about an hour. Evidently it shut itself down at some point, because it was off and cooled down when I checked it in an hour. Good thing is it worked... bad thing is... I don't know for how long.

So, I have talked with my local apple store over the phone... They were not surprised to hear about my problem, but said I'd have to bring it in to have it looked at before they could comment.  Taking it to the shop in the morning.  My last two posts were removed because they were about a petition regarding this problem.  This post is not off topic and it is regarding apples treatment of us, their valued customers.  The petition is easy to find.  I'm not sure what is more disappointing, the failing hardware, or failing customer relations...

I'm having the same issue and spoke with an Apple rep today. She said something about making "an exception" for me in light of the fact that I was a sucker and paid for a new logic board in June -- just over 90 days, as it so happens.   Anyway, it crapped out on me again, so I'm off to the Apple store tomorrow.

I'm going to make the argument that the machine was defective from the outset and ought to be replaced. Will report back.

My machine failed today with the exact same issue a few hours back. With my stomach turning, my heart racing and sweat dripping from my forehead I started troubleshooting. I could not get it to boot in any way. Not even the original install disks helped. Nor my Windows partition booted. Using CMD+S at startup I was able to see my drive was not faulty. Apparently I was on the right track by doing this step because I stumbled across this thread: http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/120259/grey-screen-after-login-blue-scr een-of-death-from-cmdr it has a TEMPORARY fix. My machine is not very stable through this fix. But usable to post this message. It crashed once already since the successful boot.
