    Hi ya

I had an iPhone 5 and notices this behavior when I updated to iOS8. I got an iPhone 6 and 6+ and they both do it. I too have my screen set to 100% and auto brightness set to off. The screen is nice and bright and then all of a sudden dims. Adjusting the screen brightness manually makes no difference. Then suddenly it goes nice and bright again. Two things have crossed my mind, 1) It's either the display overheating the software dims it, 2) An app is causing the issue, 3) A new power save feature of IOS8 or 4) Just a pure software glitch.

It can't be a hardware issue as it's happening to all the iPhones in my house and we have 5, 5s, two 6 and a 6+ .

Sorry I can't provide a cure but at least you know your not alone and not going mad. I ate going into the Apple Store and being looked at like your a loon because sods law it doesn't do it.

yeah exactly.and thank you very much for your reply btw.

it happens mostly while i m playing injustice(a game) while 3g is on(i live in india so no 4g).and you define the problem even better than me.its not so frequent so i am gonna live with it.

and thank you again sir,for your reply.

    You are very welcome.

After posting my reply I found someone else reporting the same issue on their iPhone 6+ in the macrumours forum.

Now you've mentioned about being on 3g when it happens. I've only ever noticed mine do it when I've been on 3g. I have 4g where I work and I've never noticed it do it there or when I've been on WiFi. Maybe unrelated but it's certainly looking more like software rather than hardware. If I find any solution I will post back on here and let you know. I read one person say he had the problem on his 5s and he set it up as a new device, then restored from backup and that cured it. I've done this in the past and it's never fixed anything so I'm reluctant to do that and waste time.

I have been having the same problem, been on the phone with Apple support for days trying to resolve it.

and i guess you haven't found anything of use yet.

the most irritating thing is, there is no definite pattern and the issue is Random.

i have had this issue since i bought my 5s. twice it happened when i was playing INJUSTICE. so i thought it was another app specific issue.

then it happened when i was scrolling in setting.then again the brightness dimmed while scrolling in music player.

its really frustrating that there is a problem  but i cannot present it upon  my will.

the brightness dims irrespective of its setting which in my case is always 100%

Yes, it appears to be random thus making it very difficult to document with another camera to show Apple tech support. My suspicion is that it has something to do with the iPhone backup's integration with iOS 8. Possibly somewhere in the settings things aren't working properly. The only thing I think will fix this is an fix in the iOS 8.1 upgrade. I suggest you call Apple and alert them of this problem so the developers are aware.

Been having this same problem myself as well and it's driving me insane. I thought I was crazy for the longest time, until I was able to capture it on video.

    https://vid.me/Vtb

Dims at 4:55, brightens at 6:20

From my experience it seems to happen primarily when playing games or watching videos in Safari. It's quite random when it happens, but after it does the brightness will pop back after around a minute or so

I'll be going to the Genius Bar tomorrow, so I'll be sure to report back.

Awesome, I was talking with 3 iOS Senior Advisors to try to remedy this issue and they asked me to film it, I didn't have the time. Nor do I play games on my phone. It happens to me at random. It might be a heat issue or maybe a voltage drop to the screen due to high processor usage?

Honestly not certain. While it happens more often while watching videos or playing games I've had it happen just browsing the web as well.

I know I could simply not have my screen at max brightness, but the screen really shines and I hate to lose out on that.

i have not seen anything that defines the problem better than your video.

a billion thanks to you.no seriously its exactly what happens with me.

i think its a software bug because its totally random.

well keep me updated what they say at apple.

and again thanks for making it clear that we guys are not insane and there is an issue AND YOU DID SOMETHING FINALLY TO PROVE IT.

Just got back from the Apple Store.

Before they would do anything they told me to go and set my device up as new instead of restoring from my old devices backup.

Doing this now, and will see if the issue remains.

I was told the same, however this doesn't seem like a real solution. You lose all your messages, settings, etc. This is not an isolated problem and some of us don't have the time for this. iOS 8 really is terrible.

Definitely not a real solution as it's still happening for me.

    https://vid.me/H8i

Starts off with the "dimmed" bug, and as you see adjusting the brightness slider doesn't actually change brightness at all when adjusting in the top 20%.

Then at 19 seconds in it pops back up to full brightness, afterwards the brightness slider does work.

Because of this I'm pretty sure it's not a hardware issue, but rather software.

Not sure a replacement device would hugely help out in this situation.

I agree, I am a bit peeved as well - I have had an iPhone since 2012, iPhone 4S, 5S, and now a 6. This iOS update is really poor, the iOS Senior Advisors are great to deal with but the developers are relaying the message to them, "the solution we have for you is to reset your iPhone and see if that fixes it, as your backup might be corrupted." A few things:

    1. I have been paying monthly for years for extra iCloud storage space for my backups, so I would not lose any data, and the developers are telling me to erase all my data from my phone.
    2. This is obviously not an isolated problem as many people are having it (and the developers know it).
    3. I am willing to bet it is an iOS 8 bug, not a hardware problem.

Other problems I have had with iOS 8 were:

    • Settings not saving causing a message box to pop up everytime I changed keyboards.
    • Not being able to search through my messages (their solution to the dimming issue and the messages issue was the same)

I very displeased with iOS 8. If I were Apple I would be rushing to fix all these bugs.
