Q: Major Safari & Ebay Issue With Persistent Log-Outs - PLEASE HELP...

Hi All,

Please be advised I am not that technical on things & I am in the UK running OSX Lion 10.7.5 & Safari 6.1.6 & have recently been having a major issue whereby I am persistently being asked to sign in again & again - I cannot even navigate from one page to another without having to do so & it is extremely annoying. This has never happened before with both Safari & Ebay working in harmony for many years.

The issue surfaced about a couple of week ago so I presumed it must be a ebay issue but it runs fine on Firefox. No other websites on Safari require me to keep logging in again & keep me signed in.

Safari is my main Browser and everything is set up on that so I would rather not have to switch between two Browsers and my ebay mail alerts automatically open up in Safari when clicked.

I have noticed that:

1) Certain ebay pages have a different look & place information at different locations - e.g. on some pages when watching an item it is shown in bold on the top left hand corner & on others in the middle of the page in non bold.

2) At the top left hand corner it shows (pertains to account holder & name):

a) "Hello" as normal with no "Sign In" prompt & allows one to proceed normally

b) "Hello" & asks to "Sign In" even though I am & it allows me to proceed

c) "Hello" & asks to "Sign In" on every occasion or new page even though I just did - mostly the case.

3) When showing as signed in, & I try to navigate to another page, I sometimes get the message " Sorry, we couldn't complete your request, please try again" - any further clicks to any part of ebay signs me out.

4) I have noticed at when logging in, sometimes there is different information in the web address bar - sometimes it contains the words "my beta" & "guest=1" & other times not.

I do not know if the above have any relevance but thought I would mention them just in case they are somehow.

I had a online chat with an Ebay rep & he said that there are currently no conflicts between Safari & Ebay & others I have asked using both have no issues either.

I have so far deleted the cookies a number of times & done a full reset of Safari with all boxes ticked so I presume that also cleared the cache? I also spoke to Applecare & they basically made me do the same thing - check extensions, check Keychain, Reset Safari etc & this solved nothing.

Ebay sometimes has a message that cookies need to be allowed but upon checking the Privacy section of the Safari Preferences pane they are all there.

I read that some people had success by disabling their anti-virus so last night I disabled ClamXav & it did indeed seem to have great effect - it seemed that the problem was solved as ebay ran without issue for a few hours.

Today, all day, I disabled ClamXav completely & ebay seemed to run OK for a while but then began signing me out every now & only then to increase in frequency over time until now it is back to logging me out pretty much most of the time or every few clicks when trying to navigate or open new links/pages.

I did a verify & repair permissions but not solve the problem. There was a warning report which showed up & I do not know if this is the cause of this problem or any other - it is:

Warning: SUID file “System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent” has been modified and will not be repaired.

I can very rarely can proceed for a few clicks ahead but 99% of the time (even with ClamXav disabled) & I get automatically logged out and/or am required to sign back in on pretty much every page or link I navigate to - it is driving me nuts!

Can anyone please kindly shed some light on how this can be fixed and/or resolved - I would be extremely grateful!

Many Kind Thanks,

Suave.

    Hi ..

Ignore SUID notations generated in Disk Utility > Mac OS X: Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions messages that you can safely ignore

Might be a cookies, cache, or extensions, issue.

From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab.

    Click:   Remove All Website Data

    Then delete the cache.

Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder

Type or copy paste the following

    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db

Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.

Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

If that doesn't help, troubleshoot Safari extensions.

From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.

If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.

If nothing above helped, ClamXav disabled or not, could still be the culprit. Go to the ClamXav website and look for uninstall instructions. Restart your Mac after you're done, then try Safari. You can always reinstall ClamXav later.

For issues such as this, you will get faster, more efficient answers by visiting the ClamXav Forum.

You say you disabled ClamXav, but it only runs when you tell manually tell it to, so did you mean the ClamXav Sentry function?  If so, then you can reduce the load it has on your computer by reducing the size of the watch area. Most users will find that watching their entire hard drive produces far too many scans of temporary files, many of which aren't even there when it's their turn to being scanned. You should only be watching areas where new files are being introduced from outside the computer, such as your download folder, e-mail and browser cache. Also any drives you bring in from the outside world to transfer files. I normally recommend only watching the home folder since that's where most all recently developed malware ends up. The iWorm Trojan/Backdoor installs in /Library/ but requires you to give up your admin password for it to do so. So far that one seems to be showing up only from pirate software sites.

    Hi Carolyn,

I did exactly as you stated above (basically, Monkey See - Monkey Do!). I will now test things over the next day or so & see if things have improved! As per your suggestion, I also uninstalled ClamXav (via AppCleaner) so it should not be causing any issues.

When I signed into Ebay, I got a pop up notice from OSX asking me if I wanted them system to remember or store the password & I chose allow - is this OK? The Password Tab of Safari Preferences shows the website as: signin.ebay.co.uk with my username & password as dots.

Under the Privacy Tab (Website Data Details) There are 5 ebay lists showing:

ebay.co.uk: Cache, Cookies, Databases. Local Storage

    ebay.com showing: Cache

    ebayimg.com: Cache

    ebayrtm.com: Cache

    ebaystatic.com: Cache, Plug-ins

Is this correct? Hopefully, I pray this will work - will report back & let you know!

MadMac0, thanks kindly for the info - once I get the Safari/Ebay issue out of the way, I will most definitely take on board your post & endeavour to implement your advice when I reinstall ClamXav. You were right, I mean't ClamXav Sentry that runs in the menubar - by deleting the ClamXav App from the Applicatiosn Folder & removing ClamXav Sentry from the Log-In items from the User Accounts pane of System preferences, have I done things correctly to try & ensure that it they are removed from the chain as Carolyn suggested?

    Many Thanks!

Unfortunately AppCleaner is unable to uninstall ClamXav. You should always check the developer website for instructions on uninstalling any app other than those from the App Store.  AppCleaner should be a last resort.

You can find instructions for uninstalling the web version at 23. How do I uninstall ClamXav completely?.

And for anything else you might have gotten from the App Store, from Apple:

    Uninstall apps

    • To uninstall apps you purchased from the Mac App Store, hold down an app’s icon in Launchpad until all the icons begin to jiggle. Click an app’s delete button (x).

Actually, that is not the case. If you quit or tell Sentry to stop watching it will terminate all processes. Should you ever run across anybody that has a different experience I would appreciate knowing about it directly or better yet on the ClamXav Forum.
