Q: 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.

However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.

I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .

I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):

1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?

2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?

3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.

4) Is there any other alternative?

For what it's worth, I just got a call from Currys, who I purchased my computer from, and they said they'd cover the cost of repair. Although Apple have already agreed to do it for me without charge, if anyone else in the UK cannot get Apple to do so, then it's worth pursuing a Sale of Goods Act claim which covers you up to 6 years. If you want to pursue this, make sure you get something from the Apple store to say they agree it's a manufacturing fault.

Does this suffice as a barebones system error? Occurred after format and fresh install - I'll be going to Apple store today to demand they do something at no cost to me

Can I ask what version of OSX are you upgrading from, and what model/age is this Mac. (and is it modified with additional Ram or larger hard drive)

OMG!!!!  This isn't elementary school. Stop bickering amongst yourselves. This is about MacBook Pros failing everywhere not who's can slam who the most and use their words against them. Shut up and get back to the topic. My God this isn't the YouTube comment section.

Your fighting has NOTHING to do with the topic at hand.

Correct me if needed but does not the Sale of Goods act apply between the retailer and the customer The manufacturer is not involved. Only the retailer is liable under the SOG.

I'll let Apples accountants make their decisions, I have seen their work reflected in the markets and am quite satisfied with it. But thanks for the advice.

I have 2 businesses of my own, one in Illinois, and this one, in London.

Good for you, might I then suggest you go tend to your businesses and stop spreading blinded, Apple loving, nonsense around the forums?

Couldn't agree more. I am really busy with work but pig sick of seeing junk squabbling about nothing hammer my inbox until I saw yours.

As I saw the moderators pull lots of posts yesterday about reballing services - could you please be so kind to also remove the playground squabbling that's totally polluting this thread and keep enforcing it.  It's not doing Apple any favours as a company, the opposite more like.

Some people really should know better by now - I am going back to work so behave children or I will have to tell on all of you to Jony or Tim so something gets done about it.

I would be interested to know if Currys indicated what repair they would do, new motherboard / reball, or did they just agree in general terms that they'd repair a manufacturing fault?

Yeah me too. I bought mine through Currys and haven't had a reply from the letter I wrote. If they have agreed to meet the cost of the repair, this is something at least. I'm not sure what the right channels to go through at Currys would be to try and and get the same outcome, but I anticipate any links may be removed by the moderators.

You are correct, however, the SOG only applies if the retailer accepts that the goods were faulty when sold, i.e. it's a manufacturing problem, not wear and tear.

I first went to the Apple store and had them look at it. Although they couldn't do anything other than offer me a paid replacement, I said to the guy there that I'd want to pursue a Sale of Goods claim, and he was gracious enough to print out a letter on Apple headed notepaper to the effect that they agreed it was a problem not caused by wear and tear, and what they considered to be the solution. I then emailed that document, with the date of purchase, branch I bought it from, transaction details etc. (I couldn't find the receipt) to Currys customer services. Their number is 0344 800 9090.

See the response to obwianMacobi above for details of what I did. Currys offered me the solution that was specified by Apple on the document I sent them. Whether it would've been a different outcome if it had specified the solution as being a new machine, I don't know.
