Oct 5, 2014 6:10 PM in response to SSBarneyby dvrpa,I was having this problem with both of my iPhones in the family. At first I was using a couple of knockoff charging cables. Then I used an original Apple device charging cable and it worked like a charm. Not sure what the difference is, but it solved the device recognition problem in iTunes.
Good luck.

Oct 16, 2014 5:30 PM in response to djr88by JRooke93,I was having the same problem but I've finally got it to work. What I did was:
1. Uninstall iTunes, Apple Software Update, Apple Mobile Device Support, Bonjour and Apple Application Support (in that order).
2. Make sure that has got rid of everything to do with Apple, so look through your Program Files folders (Program Files and Program Files (x86) if applicable) and delete anything that says Apple, iTunes or iPod.
3. I also uninstalled ifunbox so I guess you should uninstall anything to do with Apple devices.
4. After you've made sure there is no trace of Apple restart your PC.
5. Download the latest iTunes, version 12 just came out and seems to work well.
Hopefully that helps some people out there, I've been pulling my hair out for nearly a month now!

Nov 26, 2014 12:44 AM in response to RPWarren1by brox90,Well I didn't read through all of the posts, but here's what I did (the solution by JF Fourie didn't work for me):
1. Control Panel -> Uninstall a Program
2. Find Apple Mobile Device Support
3. Right click -> Change
4. Repair it
That solved my missing iPhone in iTunes
