HT203959: iPhoto and Aperture don't show edits to photos imported from iOS devices

Q: WHY would this be "expected behavior"?

It wasn't the behavior previously.  So this basically says that if you're going to import photos into iPhoto on a computer (instead of using iCloud Photo stream - which doesn't work for so many reasons) then you shouldn't bother editing photos on the iPhone?

Yes, and no. It has  always been the case, that only photos in the camera roll would be imported, when you connect a mobile device via USB to download the content. But previously you could save the edits to the camera roll. This no longer possible. The camera roll holds only the originals.

what?  your statement doesn't make sense.  there is no more "camera roll" only recent additions.

and those do get imported to iPhoto.  I don't see the difference (only in name... camera roll is now called recent additions)

I'm not using iCloud Photo Stream, it's turned off.

The Camera Roll is still there, only not shown as separate album. The update to iOS 8.1 will bring this separate album back.

The Mac will import the original image files stored on the device; the edited photos do not exist as image files, unless they are saved or shared new images.

Ok, but WHY would Apple choose to do this?  It's stupid.  Previously, all the way back to first iPhone (which I owned) you could make an edit on the device, and when importing to iPhoto it would import the edited version.  What's the point of editing on the iPhone then?  I don't get it.   This article from Dec 2013 hints at the edits simply being metadata anyway.  iOS: Edited photos show original photo after import or in other apps  So.... why the change?

I believe the iOS 8.1 update announced today addresses this anomaly.

Even with iOS 8.1 and iPhoto 9.6 or Aperture 3.6 the edits do not transfer from my iPad and iPhone.

They will probably seamlessly transfer with iCloud Photo Library, once we can use it from the Mac.

    Wow thats disappointing about 8.1

    Apple just doesn't get it.

I'm not going to use iCloud Photo Library. For one thing it doesn't help with VIDEOS, I still will need to transfer them to the computer the old way.  I also don't want to lose the ability to sync all the other photos from other cameras in iTunes.

I guess my only workaround is every time I edit a photo on iPhone, I have to email the saved version to myself and then save it to the Camera Roll.  How stupid.

The iCloud Photo Library , the Photos app on iOS and Mac are not released yet. What comes on Monday is a beta, so we can't be sure what will (or will not) be included.

Thats makes it even worse.  Apple has ruined a workflow, and the "solution" is not even out yet.

Thats makes it even worse.  Apple has ruined a workflow, and the "solution" is not even out yet.

That is unfortunately the problem in a nutshell. iOS 8 is all ready to go - the iOS Photos app with new adjustment tools, iCloud Photo Library to sync all photos via the cloud, and iPhoto iOS already discontinued.  Only the counterpart Photos on the Mac is still missing and "coming soon".

It would have been safer with a clear warning by Apple not to install iOS 8, before the Photos app on the Mac will be ready.
