IIt is unfortunate because the Mac mini and macbook air 2011 models hahe the necessary hardware. It was even supported in early versions of Yosemite and is why so many people say it was running just fine. I hope there is more to the story beyond an forced upgrade ploy.

Ahh no, good spot. Couldn't figure out why the option wasn't enabled, had checked the required Bluetooth version etc., won't be upgrading until they figure out how to cram a Retina display in to the Air so guess I'm out of luck for now!

Simply search google for "handoff on unsupported mac" and choose the redit link.  Problem solved.  I have no idea why it worked in earlier versions but they disabled it in the GM.  Apple keeps doing this, as they've done it with previous versions of the OS.  OS X 10.7 runs just fine on my 2006 Mac Mini, but you have to trick it into installing.  Works flawlessly and with a Solid State, it remains a very very useful computer.  I can only assume they do this if they have people report problems, but then again, you're gonna have problems in BETA software, yet everything I tried it on all through the beta and developer phases, it worked flawlessly.

It will require a new Airport card to be installed, so if you're not up for that task, then you're out of luck for now.

So my late 2011 MacBook Air will not support handoff? Apple indicated on line that it would once Yosemite was released which is what I am running and this late 2011 MBA does have bluetooth 4.0LE chip so what is the technical issue Apple?

No it is possible to get handoff to work on 2011 macs of all types.

if it already has a BT 4 chip, the reason that it isn't  workings because your computer is blacklisted. You can fix that tho, see the blog link: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1747240&page=18

I won't be modifying my late-2011 17" Macbook Pro for Handoff.   The "solution" out there for older macs that don't support Handoff involves modifying the nvram boot-args in order to support a non-Apple third party kext.    Yosemite has introduced kext signing for better security.   kext signing doesn't allow modified or unauthorized drivers to be used and the system won't boot with modified, unblessed drivers, kexts unless the nvram boot-args modification is enabled.   Problem is, the nvram modification is global and if you do it, you're disabling all kext signing on your system....meaning degraded security and you're vulnerable to possible malicious code.

Appreciate the reply but why should I have to do this? This machine has the hardware and capability to run it but is blacklisted to try and coerce me into upgrading. SoI have to hack my machine to use a feature that Apple should have enabled by default?

Well, I have a Macbook Pro mid-2012 and there is absolutely no option in settings to enable handoff; in fact, I've been searching online to see if there's a glitch I hadn't heard of.

Any ideas?

I own a Feb 2012 MacBook Air and Handoff is not an option. Looks like Apple are doing a Microsoft and building in obsolescence into their OS to encourage buying a new machine.
