Q: Macbook Air (mid-2012) won't pair with iPhone 6

I didn't see anyone ask this so far.

I checked the criteria for Continuity between devices. My Macbook Air and my iPhone 6 (obviously) meet the criteria. (By the way, I wasn't able to AirDrop ever because my devices wouldn't pair).

1) I make sure both the Macbook and iPhone has Hand-Off checked. I am running OS X Yosemite & iOS 8.

2) I turn Bluetooth on for both devices

3) Macbook shows up on iPhone list on Bluetooth and vice versa.

4) Try to connect on Macbook, clicked "Pair" the iPhone. The message comes up to check the code and pair if the code matches.

5) I check iPhone. Code matches.

6) I pair and it would say the connection was unsuccessful because the MacBook isn't within range. Ok. I did all suggestions Apple gave on the help page like moving the device closer or finding the interference. I cannot see any interference. Both the iPhone and Macbook connect to my same Bluetooth speaker perfectly fine (just for the record). And the phone is literally a few inches away from the Macbook.

That doesn't work, then I tried again and at one point, the popup message changed to "not connected because Macbook Air not supported".

Clearly, this doesn't just "work" for me and it's really annoying me. Is anyone else having this problem? I was looking forward to this feature for months.

I am having the same issue. iPhone 5s with macbook pro 15" mid 2012 (with bluetooth 4.0). iPhone has iOS 8.0.2 installed and Macbook Pro has Yosemite installed as of todays release. Calls can be made/received on the macbook, all iCloud settings are fine and content updates between the two devices. Bluetooth enabled on both (and music can be played via bluetooth on a separate bluetooth speaker), both devices are on the same wifi network (even on the same band), both have been restarted, I'm getting the same errors when trying to connect, and Handoff features are not working between the two. I understand the Handoff features function through the use of bluetooth, I'm wondering if Mondays release of iOS 8.1 helps with Bluetooth connectivity and therefore Handoff features...

I'm having this problem. Same MacBook Air and an iPhone 6. For me I was able to connect them but then they both say 'Not Connected'.

    Hello,

Maybe you have to activate the same function on the Mac FaceTime preferences first..!

If you go on FaceTime setting you can check mark iPhone Cellular Calls..!

I have the same issue with my iPhone 6+ and MacBook 2012. Initial error messages told me I was not in range, but now it says, "make sure network access is enabled." I haven't a clue what that means.

And I tried the whole FaceTime cellular bit, but by default on both my Mac and Phone, FaceTime enables iPhone cellular calls.

For some reason I tried what you said and all the new yosemite and iOS 8 features work. So thank you! However, It is still not pairing with my iPhone 6. Same issues as Arestine93, except my iMessages, phone calls, and everything else works fine on my mac now. When I try to pair it still gives the code but then says

    "Connection Unsuccessful

         Make sure "Wes' MacBook Pro

is turned on and in range"

    Which of Course it is.

Same thing here. Upgraded today to Yosemite, now my rMBP mid 2014 won't pair with my iPhone 6 iOS 8.0.2.

Also Handoff isn't working at all, and I cannot airdrop to any mac using yosemite or to my iphone. This leads me to believe that there could be some underlying bluetooth problem.

When I go to the airdrop folder on my mac, my wifi connection degrades rapidly. Ping to the router goes from 1-2 ms, to above 100ms, and even timeouts.

    Hello,

I have the exact same problem with a MacBook Pro 15' (late 2013) running under Yosemite and a brand-new iPhone 6+ (iOS 8.0.2). The pairing goes fine but the two devices won't 'connect' (my Mac will connect for a split second or two with the iPhone, and then disconnect ("Network is unavailable - make sure network access has been enabled").

The Bluetooth, however, works fine with other types of devices (a Bose speaker, a Philips pair of headphones).

I'm at my wits' ends, but it is rather comforting to see that many others seem to be facing the same problem. Must be a software issue, which will hopefully get sorted out when a new update is released (how soon?).

However, I can make and receive phonecalls on my Mac, as this does not require a Bluetooth connection, only Wifi.

    Jérôme (from France).

I am also having the same problem. Just upgraded to OS X Yosemite and Im running iOS 8.0.2 as well and my devices won't pair with one another. I have the iPhone 6 and Macbook Air 2014. For they connect for a quick sec and then it says make sure device is in in range or something. Anybody found a work around??
