Q: Time Machine not working with Yosemite

I recently upgraded (clean install) from OS X Mavericks to Yosemite.  Before upgrading, I backed up my MacBook Pro via Time Machine on a network server (QNAP.)  Yosemite is up and running now, however, I am unable to access folder history via Time Machine.  Yosemite recognizes the historical backups, however, when I select a specific date in Time Machine, nothing happens.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

I've had this happen In Mavericks.

Usually if I wait, Time Machine will come around.

However sometimes when I'm in a hurry I will open up the Time Machine drive in the Finder, find that dated directory of what I need and just restore it old school.

Installing 10.10 now  as guest OS under VMWare Fusion 6.04  before I 'trust' it enough to really install it.

Thanks for the quick reply.  I thought that might be the problem also, but I waited for nearly 30 mins and still nothing.  Is there a log I could check somewhere?  Maybe Time Machine is producing an error that is not surfacing to the UI.

I found an article from MacWorld which talks about TimeMachine logs:

    http://www.macworld.com/article/1131534/tmeye.html

It's a little dated but should get you started.

I'm getting the same on both my Macs (which were updated from Mavericks with the developer releases). I originally suspected that it was because my backup disks are both encrypted, but they mount automatically without issue (the volume passwords are on my keychain), and the backups occur without a problem. It's just that when your enter time machine, all the entries on the right hand side are red, and nothing much happens when you try to select one. You can just manually recover files from the backup disk, but that is a pain (and prone to error).

I tried watching the console when backups were happening, and after I had tried to use the time machine interface, but I can't see any obvious errors in there.

I also noticed that if you Option-click the backup icon in the menubar, the Verify Backups menu entry is greyed out too. Maybe that is a symptom of the same bug?

Is your hard drive still named the same as under Mavericks?  And if so, are you drilling down into the Time Machine's Finder window via the hard drive's link from the sidebar on the left?

Alternatively, have you guys tried booting into the recovery partition and restoring the Time Machine image from there?  (reboot and hold down Command+R until recovery mode is entered)

Same here. After upgrading to Yosemite from Mavericks, I can't do any backups anymore. It keeps saying "Preparing backup" for a long time and nothing happens. So my new Yosemite session hasn't been backed up yet.

I did backup my last Maverick session before upgrading to Yosemite and I want to go back to that Maverick session to recover some files that I accidentally erased in Yosemite. But since I'm not able to backup my current Yosemite session, does that mean I cannot jump back to Yosemite if I return to Maverick session?

    Thanks

I found that I can navigate back using the Starwars interface, in the Applications folder but not in the User Account folder.  The backups are on the disk and can be accessed there using Finder, but is a pain.

I hear that if you select the Hard Disk first, it will navigate back and then you can get to the sub folder you want.

This worked!  If I first access Time Machine from my hard drive and navigate from there it works.  Odd behavior, but glad it works!  Thank you!

I'm having the same issue. When I click on the side bar with the dates.... nothing happens. and even when it does go to a new window if I click on the up or down arrow.... the window doesn't fill up with any of my data to restore. Backups are a high priority to me....and this not working right is very concerning for me!!

I have been waitig for 24 hours, the machine running, and now I can get back in time of TM. Semms TM takes a while in the background to retrieve the older files. But I'm not certain on that. For me I could get back a huge file from Mavericks  3 month ago.

I'm seeing the same behavior.  I ended up using the Migration Assistant.  That ultimately worked, but it took a while (not sure how long as I ended up walking away, when I returned it was done).

I'd like to re-load and restore just the user accounts.  I noticed, though, that before I used the Migration Assistant, Time Machine didn't recognize any backups on my external drive.  Gotta figure that one out.
