Q: just installed Yosemite (MacPro15 End 2011), the fan is working on high speed since! any solutions?

I just installed Yosemite (MacPro15 End 2011), the fan is working on high speed since!

Is there anything I can do? On Maverick the mac worked just fine and very silently, so I assume that the new system does something wrong?

Can anybody offer some help?

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

Extensive Spotlight indexing is normal after an OS X upgrade and will take some time to finish. Leave your Mac plugged in and powered on until it does. An hour or more is not unusual.

Check Activity Monitor for the presence of any obviously burdensome processes. If nothing obvious appears, the usual next step is an SMC reset. Read all the steps including the ones preceding it, which may alleviate the problem.

    Before Resetting the SMC

Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.

    1. Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
    2. Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
    3. Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
    4. Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.

Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own

    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if it's not already connected.
    3. On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time. The power adapter indicator light may cycle off / on once.
    4. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
    5. Press the power button to turn on the computer.

    Dear John,

thank you for your suggestions, but they don't solve the problem. As soon as there is some activity the fan is on high speed.

Were you able to identify any processes burdening the CPU? To do that read Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime, affect performance, and increase heat and fan activity. Posting a screenshot with the CPU tab selected and the % CPU column sorted in descending order may help.

If you are unable to identify anything in particular please determine if the same activity occurs in "Safe Mode":

    • Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
    • You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
    • Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
    • Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
    • To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.

I'm experiencing this as well. I have checked activity monitor, and there is nothing taking up much CPU usage at all. Memory pressure is low. After installing Mac Fan Control, I see that the minimum RPM is 4307, which is odd but consistent with the continuous medium hum of the fans that I've had since installing Yosemite. Tried lowering it manually in MFC, but thats as low as the slider will go...

I just installed it new and surprise, the same thing is happening. If i look at the activity I find that the door process launchd requires 78% of cpu time. Unfortunately if you end that particular process you get a new start.

I experienced the same. I stopped apps that I don't currently need (stopped updates, etc. as well). It just sorted itself out after a few hours. It was probably just too much at once (spotlight indexing, evernote re-indexing, what have you). For what it's worth, I put the mac to sleep overnight, re-booted a few times when installing this and that, etc. I don't think a re-install is wise, as the optimization processes will just start all over again. How many hours did you give your Mac to sort this out?

In my MBP mid2010 the problem was PopChar 6.6.

After removing it, the fan has stopped in a few seconds.

    Ciao

    Hello,

I did not take note of the time but the mac was on for more than 6 hours without me doing anything. The process that took the most time form the cpu was "launchd" (about 78%) and the cpu had a temperature of about 93° C . I tried to reset the SMC and it seemed to change not much. But at some time after words the temperature dropped and the fan stopped. Meanwhile I think it's been some ( not identified) indexing processes.
