Q: iTunes won't launch ...

After installing YSM, repairing permissions, signing out and back into Apple ID, resetting the PRAM, iTunes won't launch. Once double-clicked it does nothing, sort of attempting to launch but nothing happens. iPhoto seems to be working and all other apps seem to be okay, ... still going through one by one.

My media is on an external HD but that was never a problem. I have an AppleTV through which I explore the iTunes content. But that too was never a problem.

Any idea on what else I can do?

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10), HD: 250GB SSD + RAM: 16GB

To Grugly:

When you launch 'get info', ensure that you change 'everyone to read/write' AND the 'system read only'. Close the 'get info' window, go back to iTunes.app and right click it and choose move to to Trash and empty the Trash.

Manually download iTunes from Apple https://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ and start the installer.

I updated iTunes before updating to YSM. Was that correct? I have 12.0.1 installed.

Hi Hisham,

I have done exactly the same (external HDD, Update itunes before yosemite, Mid 2011 imac)

Unfortunately I have not found a way to fix this...

Just wanted to make you feel comforted that others are having this issue...

Thanks. It is a little strange though that specifically iTunes won't launch. Maybe it was something related to the newest iTunes update. Let's see, maybe someone in the community has the golden trick.

Good idea, but it does not open iTunes either. I may try to re-install YSM again ... I just need to figure how :-)

Others are reporting the same error, and it seems linked to some older Macs. Do you know how old yours is? I'm having this issue, yet unresolved. I'm also having iPhoto launch each time I connect my phone, which can't be disabled.

Hi,
I'm having the same problem: I updated to iTunes 12 and then upgraded the OS to Yosemite on my MacMini (Mid 2011).. My iTunes-library is located on an external HDD. A click on the icon in the dock won't start iTunes, clicking the icon in the programs-folder won't either.

I have found a way to start iTunes: open the iTunes-package in the programs-folder, then double click on the iTunes-exec-file. Location: /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/MacOS/iTunes

Hey guys at Apple: please fix this. I don't want to use this workaround forever.

My iMac is of Mid 2011, which I don't believe is an older Mac.
There shouldn't be much differences between Mavericks & Yosemite in launching apps. I still believe it has something to do with the specific iTunes update. It may need some sort of a patch.

I also have an iMac, mid 2011. Helps narrow down the some of the setup. I agree, it's still annoying.

Thanks for that. Yes, you can even start iTunes with a terminal command or the method you described. However, this is not recommendable. I'd rather wait for a patch. But thanks for sharing anyway ...

Uninstall Itunes: http://www.tekrevue.com/tip/uninstall-itunes/

Reinstall itunes and work fine.

This worked for me, but I had to manually download iTunes as SU wasn't recognizing that it needed to be installed.
