Before that new iOS 8.1 comes out, I would reset yours to its factory default setup to clear out all the old stuff on your system, which may be the problem in the first place. You don't want that new revision trying to install its new stuff over the top of possibly corrupted files on your iPad. See the following for getting that done ...

Back up and Restore your iOS Device with iCloud or iTunes

Use iTunes to Restore your iOS Device to Factory Settings

And here's someone who had this procedure help them ... just for an example ... :-) ...

iPad 2 and iOS 8.0.2 Problems

you! These problems result from long-term use, continuous upgrades, corrupted files and various glitches that happen over this long term use. You just need to get your iPad 2 back to FACTORY FRESH CONDITION to start out clean!

Here's one person's solution which will help a lot of iPad 2 users!

SOLVED:  IOS 8 Issues on iPad 2:

I just returned home from a visit to the Genius Bar. Like you and many others, when I upgraded my iPad 2 to IOS 8, it became practically unusable. It was VERY slow, lagged whenever trying to to do anything. Lots of screen freezes and apps spontaneously crashing. I was convinced that the processor on the iPad 2 just couldn't handle the new IOS and I went in to see about restoring to IOS 7.

Thankfully, I was hooked up with a very sharp guy at the bar. The problem is not with the OS, it is with it being an *upgraded* OS. He used the analogy of when you had an older Windows computer and how over time (and over upgrades), they just tended to get slower and slower because of all of the garbage that was carried forward in the upgrades. At those times (and if you've ever had a Windows computer, you get this), the only thing that would speed it up would be to wipe the machine and do a fresh install of the current OS and then reload your apps, and the viola, everything would be fast again. Well, it turns out that IOS can suffer the same problems.

THE FIX:  FIRST, be sure you have a current iCloud backup of your device.  Connect your iPad to a computer that has a clean fresh copy of IOS 8 on iTunes (this is best done with a computer other than the one that you sync your device to because you DO NOT want to restore it from a back up just yet). Ideally, if you do this at an Apple store you'll be assured of the right version there and someone to answer any questions you might have along the way. You then hold the power and home button down to hard-reset the device and continue to hold them down until it reboots into recovery mode. You then follow the instructions on the computer to reinstall the OS on the device (which wipes everything from it and then reinstalls a clean copy of it). Once this is done (which only takes about 15 minutes), your device will reboot and ask you to set it up. Answer the questions about language, location, etc. and continue until it asks you to log into your iTunes account. Once you do that, it will ask if you want to either 1) Set it up as a new device, 2) Restore from iCloud, or 3) Restore from iTunes. Choose (2), restore from iCloud. This will ensure that it brings down "clean" copies of all of your apps and preferences rather than the potentially corrupted ones that might reside in your iTunes backup. That's it! It will take a few hours depending on how much data and apps you have, but I am happy to report that my iPad 2 is now running IOS 8 and it's running as fast as it ever did when it was brand new!

To sum it up, this process 1) Wipes your device and the garbage causing your problems, 2) Loads a clean and bug-free version of IOS 8 to your device, and 3) restores your apps and data so that it looks just like it did before the wipe, with the exception that it works now!  :-)

Note also that by following this process you don't have to go through the painful and laborious process of reloading all of your apps, data and/or settings. iCloud takes care of all of that for you.

thank you star traveler for this info. While i do understand it, this answer sounds kind of ********* to me. I've had my iPad mini for less than a year, have very few apps installed by me ( what I have mostly are the ones that came  with the new iPad mini). To have to thru all this Rigamarole bc I installed the update that Apple sent out sounds all kinds of wrong to me. It would be Like having a new computer module installed on your car then leaving it up to the driver (read: layperson) to figure it out when it's too much for the original engine.  I don't use iCloud bc I don't have any desire for my info to be floating around in some computer module just waiting to be hacked, (tho it has most likely been done many times already. Does one actually think this info is safe??) from reading this thread, many many folks are having much worse problems than I am having. If my phone or ipad became unusable bc of an update, I would be raising the roof. I am only having freezes, slow and choppy uploading, can't use my email and can't watch FB vids any longer. To say this is from too much usage and too many updates just doesn't hold water to me. If this iPad is capable of only 8 months of standard usage, it's time to find another company. Apple should be doing something about this. Again star traveler, I appreciate your post and may end up doing this but I will have to get over my "mad-on" before attempting to do it. I also apologize for posting this rant to your post. I don't mean to be shooting the messenger.

I recommend people do the "clean system" routine at least every year no matter whether they have a problem or not. And certainly they should do it for any full point upgrade, because it's much better for major upgrades to install on clean systems. This is something that I've known for 30 years and is not limited to Apple or iOS ... :-) ...

    Exactly.

I can offer no help for your dilemma, but I totally agree with your assertions and concerns about Star Traveier's advice.

I have told him almost the exact same thing about his links and his procedures.

Many iPad users having issues are not going to go thru all if this and jump through all of these hoops and if you do not trust cloud/remote server services to store your data, like I do,  even temporarily, then the procedures outlined will be of little use to anyone.

Plus, this IS NOT a guaranteed fix for iPad 2 and 3 owners. This still may not fix most or all of the issues with iOS 8 on iPad 2 or 3.

Plus, I do not put much stock in Star Traveler's assertions that iOS can suffer similar issues that can plague a full blown computer OS.

iOS is a much smaller and compact operating system and my assertion is that iOS does not function in the same manner as OS X and has different issues as to why iOS upgrades/updates can be problematic for users of older iDevices.

It's coming on Monday. It is not that long a wait.

Any fix that works for any user is a good fix for that user ... :-) ... and it has worked for many users. I suppose that certain people would prefer that for those it did work for, to have them go back to where they were before, just for the sake of those others it didn't work for ... LOL ...

Do a reset to factory default with your iTunes program. Always make sure you do your backups first. And after you do that you'll also get the NEW revision today with the bug fixes ... iOS 8.1!

Have you done the rest to factory default with your iTunes program, and not put your backup back on? It's at that point wjere you need to keep your machine, until you can either verify it working, or ... in that factory default state ... show Apple the problem, letting them know you have none of your data on there from resetting it to factory default. It's at that point that Apple will have to deal with it and solve the problem.

I Was in my local Apple Store yesterday and asked about this very thing.  I was told that the older Ipad2 could not support the update of 8.1, their innards just were not up to the job.  Innards is my word not theirs.

i Asked if I could unload 8.1 and was told no.

apple man said that the older ipad2 would only last between 3 to 5 years in any case.  So the frustrating slowness, abrupt crashing is not to do with BT at all, it's Apple not being very customer service savvy with the very people who buy their products and pay their wages.

COme ome on apple, do play fair,, pick up up on the problems you create for us customers.

so anyone reading this with an older ipad2 model don't bother downloading the 8.1, you won't be getting any improved service at all, I wonder if the Advertising standards agency might be interested in this misinformation?

The problem with your assessment is that Apple is selling the iPad 2 model -- TODAY -- on their online store website. The customer who buys it today can get Apple's two years of warranty service to keep it as a viable and working and running machine. The fact that Apple will give them a two year warranty means (to me) that Apple is "on the hook" for at least TWO MORE YEARS of usability for that iPad 2.

Your assessment about the iPad 2 simply doesn't match up to what Apple is doing for their customers today!
