Q: Boot Camp won't start after OSX Yosemite upgrade

Like so many others, I installed OSX Yosemite this morning and now Boot Camp no longer works.

After I updated to Yosemite I restarted my computer, held down  alt, and was presented nothing but a Macintosh HD. I followed “Loner T’s” instructions…

ndiskutil list

diskutil cs list

sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0

sudo fdisk /dev/disk0

Enter you password when prompted.

…and now a windows option is available during startup. However, when selected, all I get is a black screen with "A disk read error occurred" notice.

I’m in serious trouble if I cannot repair this issue. PLEASE HELP.

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10), Windows 7

Can post the output of the four commands to see what the issue might be?

    diskutil list

    diskutil cs list

sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0

    sudo fdisk /dev/disk0

    Enter you password when prompted.

You are missing 324 GB (999 - (572 + 103) ). Please see "Missing Operating system_ " After installing Yosemite for using Testdisk to look for deleted partitions.

I looked at it previously, I just don't understand what to do when I find a deleted partition or how to correct the issue.

Please see Bootcamp missing after expanding partition as an example of the steps once you find the correct partition.

This is as far as I understand to go. After this, I get confused.

Do a quick search, which is unlikely to return anything since there was no NTFS header to begin with. If the NTFS header was correct you would have been able to see files using "P: List Files". In the Testdisk step-by-step wiki, there is a deeper search, which is what is needed. It is a slow, tedious and time-consuming operation. You can also see the steps for deeper search in Bootcamp missing after expanding partition.

I'm running the deeper scan... very slow going. Thank you for your help!

Baja, did you upgrade to a new partition, or from your existing OSX partition? Some folks report no trouble when they upgrade from their existing OSX partition but those who create new partitions report problems.

No, I used the existing partition. I'm attempting to use TestDisk, but I have no real understanding of what I'm looking to do.

I get here and don't know where to go or do after this. I've reviewed the posts you've been referring to, but I just don't understand what I'm doing.

Interesting. Some folks say that if you upgrade from the OSX partition it will be fine. But sounds like that's not always the case so I'll hold off.
