Q: Pages 5 features checklist

As you go through the new Pages 5 can you please add an added, missing or altered features here please.

I will start with some culled from the general discussions and if you could correct any errors add them:

Added

1. Right to Left text ie Arabic, Farsi & Hebrew. Uncertain about Pashtu

2. Single model templates. You turn off document text to get rid of the default. Not sure if this then can be mixed and matched with Word Processing templates

3. Able to share outside iCloud

Missing

1. Selecting non-contiguous text gone

2. Outline view appears gone

3. Customizable Toolbar is gone

4. Many templates appear gone

5. Captured pages gone

6. Reorganize pages by dragging gone

7. Duplicate pages gone

8. Subscript/superscript buttons gone

9. Select all instances of a Style is gone

10. Retain zoom level of document gone

11. Facing pages gone

12. Endnotes gone

13. Media Inspector can't find iPhoto library on external drive

14. Update is missing for older installations, Apple is reportedly working on a solution via a redeemable code or update on the ir Support Download site

Altered

1. Language set under Edit > Spelling and Grammar > Show Spelling and Grammar now document wide

2. Subscript/superscript text is now a convoluted route Gear > Advanced options > Baseline > Subscript/Superscript

3. Header appears to be multi-column

4. New file format (but still .pages?) not backwardly compatible

5. Page numbering method changed

6. T.O.C. appears buggy

7. Template file storage location moved - to where?

8. Imported older .pages files are not translating properly

9. Text language is detected automatically now

Letting you know I can't test or verify any of these as I haven't got Mavericks yet.

Well here we are over a year later from Pages 5 with Pages 5.5 the most incompatible version of Pages yet.

We have yet another (how many does this make?) incompatible file format. It is only a 0.5 update but none of the previous versions of Pages 5 can open it, certainly none running in Mavericks, let alone all the other versions of OSX.

It can only be opened in Pages 5.5 running only on Yosemite, iOS 8 and iWork for iCloud beta. Really! What could possibly be in a file format for a word processing/DTP application that requires a specific OS? Particularly when it hardly pushes the boundaries of WP & DTP. In fact does less than its 5 year old predecessor.

It still does not do most of the basic features users have been begging for ever since it was launched, only now the little it does can't be shared with most Mac users. Not just everyone else. And it is absolutely totally unparsable should you need to rescue it.

Still, oddly enough, users persist with it.

Someone may enlighten me. I read a book a few years back called the The Corporation, The Company or something like that, which turned out to be a huge HR experiment to see just how far management could go tormenting its employees with random and nonsensical directives, endless changes and a deliberately misdirected reward system. From memory the employees ended up burning the building down.

Looks like someone at Apple thought this was an experiment worth pursuing.

    Peter,

I just wanted to say thanks for your efforts concerning this matter. I lost my old ID, but I've periodically looked at this thread since the debacle last fall. The new Pages lasted about 18 hours on my machine last fall before I ripped it out in frustration.  The only good news  is that it  finally cured me of being an early adopter.

Have you heard any report of Pages 4.3 performance under Yosemite?  Can you  mail merge again for example?

    Cheers

I can Mail merge with Pages '09 v 4.05 but I got this installation by constantly migrating both Pages and Contacts back from Snow Leopard and Address Book, which seems to make my installation a little different from everyone else.

I am trying to print letter labels for my holidays cards using Avery Labels. I cannot find the proper Mac template through avery and either way I cannot export my Numbers Address list to the Pages document. I wanted to create my own template so that I could write out every individual address I have, but cannot being that I can't enable a vertical ruler (there is no "menu" or "Settings" that I can see.

As for compatibility, don't get me started! I cannot transfer anything to my pages because it is not Mac supported.

This experience has confirmed that I need to go back to Microsoft Office for Mac. I cannot believe this. My frustration is overwhelming.

By reading the many posts in this thread & others you will have discovered that Pages 5 does not do mail merge, period. Earlier versions of Pages can do mail merge but labels is something that Pages was never designed to do. You can use an Avery label template in Pages 4 or earlier, either a native Pages version or a Word version, but the easiest way to make labels using an Avery template is to use Contacts (in your Applications folder). In the print dialog you can select the desired template.

The problem with doing labels in Pages, even when it was possible in Pages '09 was that it only merged one address per page. You may have had 24 labels on the sheet, but they would all be the same. There are work arounds for Pages '09 and Pages 5.5.1 has an AppleScript that patches this but it is a bit of work.

Simplest solution as Peggy points out is to use the tool provided, Contacts or Address Book.

Create a Group of your holiday addresses, or select them, then Print and select the Avery labels you want in the Layout option..

PS You have left it late.

I gave up and downloaded Microsoft office... now i just have to figure out where they sent my product key code (which they didn't include in the email they sent) and am on the phone waiting to talk to someone. I should just grab a **** pen and start writing addresses out because technology is failing me

You would need pharmaceuticals for the hand cramps, as like the rest of us, you are likely unaccustomed to long finger hand expression.

So why aren't you using Contacts/Address Book?

They will even print directly onto the envelope for you as well as labels.

I've been a PC and Microsoft Office user for 17 yrs and 3 yrs a "Hybrid". I was starting to like some of Apples stuff (iPad, iPod, iPhone, AppleTV) and software, too. Now I must buy Word for PC-MAC since I can't even do BASIC things like select non-contiguous text. I have 150 places I have to change Styles. These are BASIC features. Garbage is FREE, too!    Will you ever add back the features?

Seriously, the should've made TWO versions with a "Lite" and "Heavier" Feature set. If they want I would even develop it for them.
