Q: 30 pin to VGA adapter won't work since iOS 8

I have the iPad  3rd generation. I use my iPad in my classroom and connect to the projector with a 30 pin to VGA adapter. It worked great until I installed iOS 8. Now I get an error message that the iPad does not recognize the device. Any one else struggling with this? Is there a fix?

Didn't work for me - ipad 2, ios 8.02 - very frustrating. Stood up on Sunday to give beautifully illustrated Keynote and nothing!! Other strings are saying hdmi adapter doesn't work either. If so, Apple has dumped a load of us right in it as we depend on ability to project over VGA!

Get your video in full screen.  Connect hdmi adapter.

Use Wifi -- apple tv or chromcast

Here is a longer discussion on the problem.

Hdmi adapter not working after upgrade to iOS8

Seven or more people report problem with apple cable too.

    Reported by  Boonekingdom :

if you full screen the video fist, then connect the hdmi, it will work.

Three people report success with this method two people did not.

Two people report success using chromcast.

One person reports success with apple cable instead of third party cable.

The cheaper generic version doesn't have a lightening connector so why should the supplier need to licence it? Furthermore, I don't see how a unit designed to work with the the original 30 pin connector is any more of a hazard than an  equivalent Apple branded product.

    I have the same issue:

My cable is Apple's 30 pin to VGA... Tests:

iPhone 6 iOS 8.0.2 with additional 30 to lightening adapter - not supported message

iPhone 5 iOS 8.0.2 with additional 30 to lightening adapter - not supported message

iPhone 4S iOS 8.0.2 - not supported message

iPad 2 iOS 8.0.2 - not supported message

    iPhone 4S iOS 7.1.2 - works like a charm

iPhone 3G iOS 4.2.1 - not supported message (tested for giggles, but it never did work)

Not sure if this is a bug or intended by Apple (perhaps to sell Airplay and Apple TV??) , but I hope they make it right. These are my findings...

I have an ipad2, and contacted our school's inside sales person for Apple, said they were unaware of it so I need to open a ticket with Apple, which I did and shared with him this conversation as well.   I have an appointment set up with their tech in the morning, will be happy to share the fix-that is if one is provided.  I did find out that the rollback is no longer available.

That will be greatly appreciated by all.

Look forward to your update. Good luck.

So I have had no problem with VGA output since replacing my original (unsupported) connector with a brand new Apple branded connector. The only think I had to do before it would work was a hard reset (hold home and power buttons down simultaneously unto the iPad reboots).

So here is my update from Apple-

We have discovered that it is the firmware and hardware version on your vga adapter that is not working, we could re-create it and break a perfectly working adapter on an ipad and an iphone.  We found another vga dongle, same part number (all Apple by the way) but with different software versions.  All this information has been passed on to their higher engineers, so we are hoping a fix is coming soon.  They emailed me about an hour ago and said they have an update but backlogged and will get with me soon.

What worked- Apple vga adapter, Model A1368, Hardware 1.0.0, Firmware 1.0.0

What did not! -Apple vga adapter, Model A1368, hardware 0.0.2, Firmware 0.0.9

So why not buy all new adapters you ask.....we are a school district, we are poor We just need them to fix what they broke before the update.

Me too.  I have called Apple Support, and they first claim they have never heard about this. (!!!) Then, after asking for my phone number in case of disconnection, the call was disconnected....and, surprise....no call back.  VERY FRUSTRATING.  Is Apple getting too big for it's britches??????

iOS 8 dropped compatibility of 30-pin connectors
How could Apple's iOS 8 eliminate compatibility of 30-pin connectors WITHOUT WARNING!!
Was this unintended? Regardless, Apple should fix this or, at least, provide a way to roll back to iOS 7 FORTHWITH.
Otherwise, a bad publicity storm is brewing against Apple.

AFAIK, Apple has not dropped 'support' for the 30 pin to VGA connector. I did have problems with a generic connector that my iPad 3 refused to work with but an Apple branded replacement worked straight  out of the box. The 30 pin VGA connectors should also support video mirroring from later iPads with the lightening to 30 pin adaptor. See iOS: About Apple Digital AV Adapters

Remember, its the version of hardware and firmware of the adapter itself that is causing the issue with the ios updates, so please call it in to Apple. I was told the same thing, new issue, never heard of this from anyone else....blah, blah, blah.

Now Apple would like me to take my good and bad adapter to a nearby store, so that an Apple trained technician can tell the engineer the same stuff I gave them over the phone.  I am still working with my local engineer as well , an Apple employee, to see if he can push it up the chain further.

Same problem - I-pad 2, happily using a 30-pin VGA adapter until ios 8. I was using a  genuine Apple connector, so to my mind yes, they did stop supporting it by failing to allow older firmware versions to be accepted. Waited for update to 8.1 but not change. Went to my nearest Apple store today and tried out a new connector in the shop and it worked! They couldn't confirm what firmware version it was, but it was new and it worked!

Like everything Apple, an expensive issue to solve at £25  ($US40) but I needed my projection capability back! Now I've spent the money they'll probably make everything backwards-compatible.

I have an iPad 2 and was planning to get the 30 pin to VGA adapter. Until I saw this thread. Any chance iOS 8.1.1 update fixed it? Anyone tested it yet?

What is the problem?  Buy the latest adapter from Apple. It will work.  The problem arises with older apple adapters and non-apple adapters.

Or, goto store.  Try adapter in store & verify that it works. Return non-working adapter.
